  • Got sold a real bad one :(

    #1
    Oh dear !

Well as most of you know a bought my nice black MX5 about 5 Months ago, when i went to look at the car it was exactly as described, good condition ran well and pretty good s/h, I decided to go for it as it was excatly what I was looking for, a few weeks later I finally had a chance to get it up on the ramp at a friends work, to my pleasent suprise I was greeted with a relatively freshly undersealed clean looking under underside! 4 days ago I took my car for an MOT expecting all to go well, it failed, at first the guy said just a few little rust spots nothing to worry about, a friend was happy to do the work and all was looking ok! Took it down to his garage today and we started to look at the sills in more detail, some sanding later and to my horror, the whole thing was pretty much filler, with that off we began to discover the bad truth.... the reason it was frehsly undersealed, the guy had bodged it, undersealed it and sold it! He made it worse by trapping water and rust on the sill which has now spread to main chassis, the prognosis is not good, I have an apointment on monday with a local body specialist who is going to take a look and see how bad it is, judging from what I have seen so far I am not hopefull! It looks like it might be more than the car is worth to fix it

The worst part is I am booked on the scotland tour for less than a month away and I have nothing to drive (I am not taking my dad's saab estate as I just wont be any good)!

All in all really not a good day

So sorry to hear that Anton. I bought a lemon once which seemed good when we checked it over then broke down half an hour after I bought it and I discovered the engine was buggered. I managed to get part of my money back and sold the car on as spares ot repairs but you can only demand your money back within 2 weeks of purchse.

I take it you didn't have an AA or RAC vehicle inspection when you bought it? If you did then you could claim from them for not spotting it.

Have you called the PN office? Maybe they have someone on the reserve list who could take your place. Or perhaps you could hire a car for the week? I think the guys may have contacts with a few hire companies, could be a problem with your age though

If I had something I could lend you I would but I'm having car nightmares myself at the moment
Perhaps you could find a non-runner with a solid body on ebay and swap your engine in? That might be the cheapest way to sort it.

    Good luck!!

We bought an XR3i like this back in the 90s (never again - awful car) trouble is with a lot of sports cars they sit very low so it's really hard to have a good look on a normal turn up and view situation , add to that all the body cappings and spoilers that hide stuff you really don't stand a chance. It was absolutely rotten when I took the rear arch-sill capping off , I actually pulled out several carrier bags that were holding the filler in place, this was a few months down the line and even worse the seat belt mounting was hanging by a thread.

When its this bad you have two options - break it for spares , at least you get two thirds or half your money back , or a really low cost (works from home) welder , this is what we did , it took him months as he was only doing an hour or two a day but at least we got it roadworthy again.
It really doesn't make up for the fact you've been had though , sad that there are these people out there that do these things.

No-one is in as its the weekend, Im sure one of them will see this post anyways! Yeah I am pretty upset right now, dont think she will see the road again, certainly not in my ownership, hoping someone on the owners club is after a project car/ engine, will know for certain whether she lives or not on Monday :/.

Dreamshack works weekends! Mind you that is because he is working flat out on other projects including my Sebring and Harsh's Stag. That's why he's quiet on here! He's not too far from you though Anton and now has a spray booth on site too, may be worth giving him a call and asking him to take a look. When does the MOT actually expire? Are you able to legally drive it to him to take a look?

It ran out on Thursday, I booked it in on Monday, but because the initial thought were that it was only a little rust we just decided to do the work this weekend, so I cant take it anywhere I am afraid.

You can legally drive it to and from an MOT centre if it's booked in for a test. There just happens to be an MOT centre very near Dreamshack . Call him first and discuss though. Posting pictures of the problem may help too.

Just seen this Anton, that really sucks mate

We've got 3 weeks or so before Scotland so i'm sure we can find something that will work.
Fiona's suggestion of Dreamshack is a good one..

What's the car worth in good condition and what are the works costs estimated as?

Just spoke to Mark and he said. If you have the MOT fail sheet with you then you can legally drive it to a garage if you have it booked in for the MOT work. So that's no problem, just call him first so he can put it in the diary.
He will be at the workshop till about 10pm tonight too, so get yourself down there, get it sorted and get on tour

I am in today chap! You would be legal to drive to me for MOT work if booked in with me. I am here until at least 7pm today working on a show car that has had a last minute huge hitch
Give me a call if you want to pop by to let me have a quick look, then I can book you in the diary and you are legal to drive to me. I am sure we could work out a mutually acceptable price!

I can't make it today ! I'll see how tommoz goes but it looks like the main sturctural beams are rotted ;(! the car owes me 1900, to get
into decent condition is gonna cost more than that I think! It still ideally needs a cambelt doing soon, and the exhaust looks a little dodgy! It's all bit
forked at the moment! It would only be worth about 3,500 in good nick so
it's not really gonna be viable!

Do as you're told and talk to him . No harm in having a chat, may not be as bad as you think and Mr Dreamshack builds whole chassis and space frames for cars so a rotten beam won't be a problem!
