View Full Version : Informal Meet and short run anyone?
Its winter yes and its cold but that why cars have heaters!
Does anybody fancy a bit of B-road bashing during the weekend in Jan sometime?
Im in Herts, so north of london, and know quite a few nice roads in the area. Robin is from Beds and I'm sure he could suggest some in the neigbouring county also.
What do you think? Meet at the ace for some full english and head on to the sticks for a bit of scratching of the itch?
Any takers?

I'd be up for doing this the other way around - a bit of a morning hoon which ENDS at the Ace for a slap up breakfast. That way you get to enjoy the empty roads before 9am and a proper meal after!
:)
Ooooo, yeah, count me in. Was just thinking how long till the next run with no breakfast club till March!
I work weekends but usually late shifts so should be able to make a morning run (not too early tho Pete, would be nice to see daylight :) Roads are pretty quiet in Jan anyway, the christmas shoppers are all off the road and hibernating.
absoloutely, lets do it, how about a new years day run?

Can't do 1st Jan, i shall be attending the weird and unusual car show at Phoenix Green, as i do every year :)
You're all more than welcome to join me of course, though i suggest bringing a warm coat and a camera!
Sounds good, I have the day off :D
Where's phoenix green? I believe there is something on at Brooklands that day too.
a run to an event would tie in with the normal PN style......so why not, and yes, where is Phoenix green?

Phoenix Green is on the A30 near Hartley Witney, between junctions 4a and 5 of the M3. Some fabulous roads round there too, which i know rather well :)
Got room for one more? (was nice to meet everyone last nite)

hmm sounds good but got a funny feeling the only car il have is the 1.6 focus :(
Cool! So is the plan to run from the ACE to Phoenix Green?

It wasn't, but that sounds pretty good!
So, Ace for, err, 7:30 breakfast?
Hmm, scratch that, just checked the Ace website and they only open at 9am on New Year's Day.
I guess we meet at the Ace for 09:00, have breakfast, and then head off to Phoenix Green :)

Sorry just spotted the date not the 1st I'm in Cornwall.
Sorry guys, cant do new years day, but sounds like a few people will come along.
Maybe we should try and come up with some venue/event to go every every fortnight odd lets say to keep the spiritr alive still spring.
Definately early morning run definately the way forward, i'm an early riser but pete your somthing else!
Will see if there anything to run to on the weekend of 18/19th of Jan and report back.
Oh nearly forgot, welcome ACZ, what did you come in on monday, not sure I met you but next time?
verysideways
16-12-09, 09:55 AM
Chris - when you were eating your chilli cheese and chips i was chatting to ACZ and his friends on the table next to us about the Highland and Alpine tours.
Yep that was me! Wasnt in my car that day, hopefully im off 235 miles on saturday to go pick an mx5 up, then its sideways time! What car were you in Chris?
Ah yes I rememebr now. I brought my mgtf down that I got back from the garage after 6 weeks and was boring pete with all the details of what had been replaced.
Does an mx-5 have an lsd? if not it might be quite hard to go sideways. You can alwyas get one fitted if not.
Yep, its the iS sport model which has a torsen LSD as standard apparantly so fingers crossed! If not one will be fitted ASAP!!!
verysideways
16-12-09, 16:15 PM
New engine, recon'd box, new rad, etc. :)
Some MX5's have a lsd fitted as standard, most do not, but the car's very light and has a very good power-to-grip ratio so is nicely balanced and easy to slide even without an lsd.
You can check if your version came with lsd as standard here: http://www.mx5-mazda.co.uk/
Of course you can always jack the car up and spin one rear wheel to see if you've got a slippy diff...
Why did I not buy an MX-5!!!!!!!!! and I got my rover pile of poorly built tat!
I think it was the mid engine maybe, which means to get to the engine, you dont take the engine out of the car you take the car off of the engine!
Crickey that is a fair amount of work! It's a shame you can't make the run on new year day! Perhaps 2 runs are in Order?
definately more informal runs need to be organised, the more runs the better, keeping the spirit alive, and the ich under control! Also publisising the club and encouraging others through informal routes to join.
Looks like I will be coming to this one in the Coupe :(! Im having such issues with getting this new car at the moment Im not sure it will happen till midway through january! You would have though having the cash and a car to trade in would make it simple, but alas not!!!!
Got my Mx5 so looks like new years run will be heater on roof down for me!!! :)

Woohoo!!! So where are the pictures then eh?
Careful out there in the snow - rwd cars don't always do too well in the white stuff ;)
:) Pictures will come once i have given it a quick clean to remove the 300 motorway miles of grit and crap! Went for a quick drive yesterday and youre right RWD + snow = FUN!
rwd cars don't always do too well in the white stuff ;)

Don't get me wrong, i love it, but then i have lots of experience with rwd and also with snow.

or shall we keep it to just us?

Parking is always "ingenious" at Phoenix because a lot of cars come and go during the course of the day - what the heck, the more the merrier :)
We all still on for this? The MX5 loved yesterdays fun and wants some more!

Just an idea but if you haven't already met him guys this guy is based there
http://www.phoenixgreenstudio.co.uk/
he does a lot of work for Octane magazine etc , potentially a good business partner for PN ? , has an "infinity bay" for car photography and gave me a quick look around his interesting and historic studio when I was trying to arrange my shoot but unfortuneately he was abroad and couldn't do mine on the week mine was done. Genuinely helpful and personable guy into classic and performance cars.

I would think he will be unless he's away on business , his studio actually adjoins the Phoenix pub car park where all the cars assemble , I think a lot of the vintage car guys know him so just ask or look for the guy with a really pro camera..unlike mine :blush5:
I found the site for it and it shows they have had a change in ownership http://www.phoenixinn.co.uk/! I will phone tommoz to check the event is still on!
I'm also currently planning on the Brooklands thing, but if there's a run in the offing I might show up...
Just checked with the Pheonix Inn and all is going ahead for the event! Looking foward to a full fat full english :), my reward for being up early!

We are on the London Road, the A 30 in Phoenix Green just south of Hartley Wintney in NE Hampshire.

I'm leaving my dog at my dad's place tonight & even though I'm going to a rather large NYE party tonight, those there will be a bunch of middle aged fuddy duddies (rather like me) so, it should be relatively plain sailing.
Nothing possibly could go wrong this time!

Hi guys
I tried to post yesterday but it didn't seem to work. I'm a relative newbie to Petrolhead Nirvana but would like to join your breakfast and drive in the morning. I used live in Hartley Wintney area so know some of the roads in the region too. Anyway, if you see me drive up in a white R8 at the Ace please let me know how to find you as I don't know anyone else in the group !
cheers
Mike
Hi Mike, dont worry we're a friendly bunch...
i'll be in the red 360 Spider.
see you in the morning :)
Hey Mike, Are you in the Chertsey area? or were you there just before xmas? Saw a white R8 on the Twynersh roundabout. Can't be too many of them around, although there may be a black one at the Ace on the 11th.
I fully intend making it to the Ace in the morning for a hangover special and will be in a black Sebring SX. However should things get out of hand tonight then Chertsey's en-route so I'll meet you on the way through :D

31-12-09, 14:13 PM
Wasn't planning on passing Chertsey... ;)
There's a fantastic road from M4 J11 which drops us straight into Hartley Wintney, five minutes up the road from Phoenix Green.

I quoted that to a buds driver who asked if i wanted to swap while we were at some lights!
i think he may be off to take a chainsaw to the roof of his bus now!
Hehe, I remember driving across London in that Dino kit and turning into a street only to be faced by a width restriction and speed bumps as far as the eye could see
A very sweet bus driver blocked the whole junction for me so I could reverse back out :)

Hi guys, Great day out, nice to meet some fellow enthusiasts. I'll be trying to join more activities as and when I'm in the UK, good to get the car out even this time of year. The impromptu layout was cool, maybe we should do it again with a more planned drive and end up at a pub if there aren't car events on . I'll put in a suggestion next w/end I'm here and devoid of kids etc.
Cheers

never stood a chance of getting back in time for the Phoenix meet , nasty four car crash in Hartley Wintney high street added to things as well , they landed the air ambulance and everything ,anyone know what that was about ?
Nope we must have been long gone by then! Was good to meet you maverick! I agree with spirit, would be nice to get a quick passenger trip round the block sometime!

The old trick at the Ace Cafe when it was still predominantly a biker hang out was they used to put a song on the Juke Box and you had to race up, round hanger lane roundabout and back, before it finished :D
I think all the traffic lights have put paid to that little game now but pick a long enough track and it might still be doable ;)

November Rain?
Or I could be cunning and put 4'33" on... who'd know if it had ended or not?
How about Telegraph road, Dire Straits, thats about 14 minutes long isn't it?

Yes. And a cracking song to boot.
Should do the job, if the traffic and red lights aren't all against you ;)

I'm old enough to remember 'concept albums'. With one of those, one could drive around the M25 before a track ended.
ahhhhh the good old days when the ace was still on the north circular road!........

My iPhone's only a little one (8Gb) and I've got 528 songs on it... could drive to Scotland on that. ;)
