View Full Version : Dunton Ride in a Supercar day Sunday 5th Sept 2010
in 2009 4000 people and 100 supercars turned up to make a huge difference to an underfunded charity.
we raised over £20,000, and had a great time doing it.
2010 and the event is back.
more cars, more displays and more for you to do.
the fun fair, bouncy castles
as well as the mass of stands and stalls means another fantastic family funday.
a little matter of the High speed banked track which Ford let us loose on for the whole day.
It's closed to the public so this really is a money can buy experience whether you're bringing your supercar or donating to charity to and enjoying a passenger ride.

Littlehavens Trackday
The event starts at 10.00am on Sunday 5th September and is based on giving rides around the track to members of the public and ends at 4.00pm.
If you arrive anytime after 9.00am, you will be given the opportunity of practicing on this banked track that is very different to a normal flat track.
When you arrive, be careful as there are a number of speed bumps after you enter the Fords Dunton Area – I strongly suggest a slow approach.
Please check your insurance – most of you will be aware of track day restrictions. You will be asked to sign a waiver for the organisers and you will be given and fitted with a wrist band, without which you will not gain access to the test track. Passengers will also be required to sign a waiver and be fitted with a wrist band this will protect you from third party claims. Crash helmets will not be necessary and are not required.
Eight cars at a time will be on the track and drive 2 laps approximately 4 minutes total. No overtaking will be permitted and a maximum speed of 90 mph has been suggested
The track will be managed by marshals with flags. The reality is that with 8 cars on track, this will act as a brake and extreme speeds won’t be possible. Fords will stop any excesses but as we will have passengers, we will not want to terrify them.
When returning to the unloading area, the marshals will be waiting to help passengers out. You can then return to the new passenger area or go to the adjacent area for a break.

Which Charity is this one in aid of ?
Will there be static displays like DDO ? Thought the car display was a bit flat and uninspiring last year :( So there is an area that could be re-vamped for 2010 :)
Shame the track isn't a bit more interesting but not much anyone can do about that.................. could never understand how Ford could consider it a test track when it's so unlike any real road :confused:

If you're driving then the only cost is your fuel and tyres :D
other than that, the day i believe is £5 entry for adults and (I think) £3 for kids
The format is similar to the concept of Dunsfold but on a slightly smaller scale (not too much smaller though)
There is a fair, stands stalls and a smaller static display area, plus of course the cars going around the Dunton test track.
It's a great fun day out and all in aid of the Littlehavens Childrens hospice
if you want any more info please feel free to ask

I take it you then pay to be a passenger on track which goes to charity. If so do you pre-book or on the day. How do you get the chance to take your own car on track and is the deal only if you have a paying (donating) passenger?

I take it you then pay to be a passenger on track which goes to charity. If so do you pre-book or on the day. How do you get the chance to take your own car on track and is the deal only if you have a paying (donating) passenger?

I'm happy to help in whatever capacity - If you would like me to take people on track I'm certainly prepared to do that - the old tyres need to have a send off in style anyway. Otherwise I would be happy to put the car on static display and offer a high-vis vest, long arms and a loud voice for whatever you want me to do on the day ;-)

I'm really interested in this also...a great idea. Few queries...
1. Am I a PN member because I have registered on here or is a member a different thing?
2. What is the format of the day once you have paid for entry.. you pay each driver/car to take you for laps on the circuit?
3. Do I need to have a 'super' car to attend? My car isn't quite as super as most of those mentioned above (Elise 111R)

1/ You have signed on the forum, your status is now Junior member :) The more posts and time you are on here your membership gets updated
2/ There will be other attractions / static displays to look around at Dunton :) As for the supercar rides, The cars come around in a line, you can sometimes hold out for a particular car but in general the marshals/helpers will put you in the first available car. You get 2 laps around the banked track at a brisk pace :D
3/ You do not have to have a Top End car to attend, but You will not be able to use the track :)

:drive: Hello, we spoke at Thruxton :) Top car Sir :thumb: Im sure HARSH will be able to squeeze you in at Dunton :) You should have a ball around there :) One thing though, getting to the car park at dunton involves going over some big speed ramps within the ford area. We will have to guide you in so as to avoid any underside damage :)

Littlehavens Trackday
The event starts at 10.00am on Sunday 5th September and is based on giving rides around the track to members of the public and ends at 4.00pm.
If you arrive anytime after 9.00am, you will be given the opportunity of practicing on this banked track that is very different to a normal flat track.
When you arrive, be careful as there are a number of speed bumps after you enter the Fords Dunton Area – I strongly suggest a slow approach.
Please check your insurance – most of you will be aware of track day restrictions. You will be asked to sign a waiver for the organisers and you will be given and fitted with a wrist band, without which you will not gain access to the test track. Passengers will also be required to sign a waiver and be fitted with a wrist band this will protect you from third party claims. Crash helmets will not be necessary and are not required.
Eight cars at a time will be on the track and drive 2 laps approximately 4 minutes total. No overtaking will be permitted and a maximum speed of 90 mph has been suggested
The track will be managed by marshals with flags. The reality is that with 8 cars on track, this will act as a brake and extreme speeds won’t be possible. Fords will stop any excesses but as we will have passengers, we will not want to terrify them.
When returning to the unloading area, the marshals will be waiting to help passengers out. You can then return to the new passenger area or go to the adjacent area for a break.

Another question if thats Ok.
High chance you won't be needing me on the day but just incase you do is it OK to have some practise time in the morning? Also how does it work do I turn up and say I'm with PN and explain I'm down as a reserve driver or something different? Can I leave my car in the static display with some of my friends from the MOCGB and then bring it over to trackside if I'm needed?

1:By memory, last year the queues were quite long toward the end of the day as the car numbers dwindled. If need be would you like some of us to come later and stay later ?
2:Those that are driving do you all have track insurance, or do you buy a policy just for the day, and if so who from? I appreciate that there's no racing, and the speed is ( sort of!)limited but blow outs etc do happen so I'd like to have peace of mind if poss.
3:Never done this type of thing in my own car before, any tips appreciated!

Brian, i'm more than happy to put you on the reserve list if you want.
I'll be checking with everyone early next week to ensure they can make it.
We may well have a few drop outs so it's possible, and bear in mind it's a long day cars may leave early or more people may turn up to take rides.

Another question if thats Ok.
High chance you won't be needing me on the day but just incase you do is it OK to have some practise time in the morning? Also how does it work do I turn up and say I'm with PN and explain I'm down as a reserve driver or something different? Can I leave my car in the static display with some of my friends from the MOCGB and then bring it over to trackside if I'm needed?

the answer to all those questions is yes!
you can practice, you just turn up and they guys there will have a list of cars and usernames (including reserves)
you can choose to either park in the display area or with the 'ride cars'
You need to be there before 9am
Bachi ( or anyone who can answer) a couple or questions if I may....
1:By memory, last year the queues were quite long toward the end of the day as the car numbers dwindled. If need be would you like some of us to come later and stay later ?
2:Those that are driving do you all have track insurance, or do you buy a policy just for the day, and if so who from? I appreciate that there's no racing, and the speed is ( sort of!)limited but blow outs etc do happen so I'd like to have peace of mind if poss.
3:Never done this type of thing in my own car before, any tips appreciated!
happy to answer....
1. You need to be there early enough to get the driver briefing but you dont need to drive straight away or you may wish to give your car a rest at varying points during the day
2. It's a tough call, we do recommend you get your own track insurance for the day although as you say the risks are far lower than on a normal track day, they are still present.
it's worth checking with your insurer to see if you are covered for a trest track as opposed to a racetrack, otherwise they may be able to recommend a decent track day insurer...it isn;t cheap though sadly.
3. take it easy, you will have the chance to practice in the morning to get used to the banking, once you realise how quick you can go it's a lot of fun.
you might want to go out as a passenger with someone that's done it before then follow them afterwards.
the important thing is that you're comfortable with what you're doing, there's no pressure to go faster than you want to, so staying within your own limits is key.
most people who come out as passengers will be overjoyed to be there so you don't need to go that fast to impress them or give them a big smile.

Unfortunately I'm all paid up for another event on sunday, but on the upside it's only 15 miles from Dunton so I may drop in.
The other event is me and 349 other Caterhams driving from Caterham to an airfield in Essex - so if you see a few Caterhams on the road you'll know why. If anyone wants to come on the Caterham trip I have a spare seat.

Excellent, thank you very much :D Now it's a mad rush to suss out why i'm down on power :o found a rather large boost leak on the plenum last weekend and was all happy that it was sorted until i took her out and found she was still down on horses after fitting a new gasket :banghead:

Hi Chris, I'm actually not going to be there as I'm away on alpine.
The charity will brief you, so if you could get there between 8.30 and 9am that would make things much easier.
Just bring yourself, or if you do have walkie talkies feel free to bring them, they will come in useful no doubt

So for those thinking of using the southern end of the M25, why not meet in Clackets lane service station at around 7:30am :)
Or If you fancy something a little more sceneic, we could meet at the Godstone turn off Jcton 6, M25. and use some of the A roads.

Still undecided wether to run on track or not tomorrow as been to AMD on the rolling road this morning and the car posted 432 BHP which ain't too shy but is 70 0r 80hp down on what it should be :o Running fine but without knowing the cause of power loss not sure wether to risk giving it a beasting :o
ps. Don't forget about the vicious speed humps on the way in................. as i recall they're ok if you tippy toe over them :yes:

There is one BIG one after car park C, whenever I took my car to work (I used to work there) I always went through the entrance of car park B down the ramp and out the exit to avoid this 'ramp'! My car just would not go over it, it's one of the ones made from block pavers, goes up about 6" and across 4 or 5 ft and then down 6". The other ramps are ok as they are the quick up and over humps at around 4" three of them I think!

Guys, do all of you have track insurance? I've got a quote from Moris and it's 145 quid (effectively 1st party)which for the sort of day it is seems rediculous.Is the no overtaking rule religously stuck to(seem to remember someone did it last year), generally from a viewpoint it all seemed quite sensible. Competition Car Ins couldn't be bothered to ring me back,any other options?
Do we feel some piece of mind will add to the enjoyment of the day?

i havent got track day insurance for this as there is No overtakeing and its fairly safe compared to most other track events.

I've got a quote from Moris and it's 145 quid (effectively 1st party)which for the sort of day it is seems rediculous.Is the no overtaking rule religously stuck to(seem to remember someone did it last year), generally from a viewpoint it all seemed quite sensible. Competition Car Ins couldn't be bothered to ring me back,any other options?
Do we feel some piece of mind will add to the enjoyment of the day?
I have no insurance. The way I look at it is that it seems like less of a risk than driving down to the supermarket (hope I don't regret saying that). It makes it quite an expensive day otherwise and distracts from the point of raising money for the charity and not a track day.

First thing I've done like that and what a friendly bunch of people involved.Some of the cars were simply fantastic .Loved the blue Viper 47? and the Mosler.First test run was behind a yellow Murci and although I was well chuffed about the pace of mine up following I couldn't hear it above the utterly epic noise in front.Met the blue and red Viper GTS? owners in the petrol staion and it was their third visit if the day!!!I felt a lot happier about my 110 miles to a tank then!

We were 1st there this morning and last to leave, giving the marshals and Band members a quick blast around the track :boing:

Was a great but very tiring day. All for a good charity so its all worth it! Thanks to all drivers and car drop off + pick up point.

Was a good day.......... even though i was a bit gutted my car wasn't quite fit enough to run :o
The track side of things was very good and busy all day and i think the Marshalls deserve a big pat on the back for working tirelessly all day with next to no rest :clap: well done Chris Sparky & Martin to name a few ;)
Away from the track i would say the rest of the event was an improvement on last year but i think it's also fair to say it has a long way to go before it's even approaching the same level as Dad's Day Out :)
A few things baffled me............. why did it seem a good idea to someone to have a tatty car boot sale in the middle of the car display area :confused: Pertrolheads come to these events and that is not what they want to see :rolleyes:
Also, why were spectators not allowed to watch the track at the banking at either end :confused: it wasn't a problem last year so can only imagine this was a venue ruling but it was quite damaging to the event as it meant there was very little opportunity to spectate the track and a lot of people were seen leaving the event at lunchtime or even before due to boredom as there wasn't a lot else to do frankly and the catering was a bit poor also :o
Sorry to say the negative things about an event that supports a really great charity but if it goes unsaid then there is less hope of improvement in future.
I intend to work very hard to ensure my car is available to participate in these kind of events next year as so far it always seems to let me down when it matters most :rolleyes: Did manage to make a small contribution to the display area by bringing some Fords along to show but even that fell a bit flat as more than half the people coming dropped out at the last minute for various reasons :(
p.s Caught half a report on the news this morning that Little Havens have won a national Award for their charity................... so well done them :thumb:
I'm sure you're trying to be constructive but couldn't we just let the dust settle on what appears to have been a happy and successful day before we come with the negatives?

The negatives are always easier to bring up when it's fresh in the mind, and it's not like there's any obvious official place to address them away from the forum to be honest. I agree with all of Jules's comments, plus whoever it was who kept sending non-track cars up to us in the "paddock" area, man ... *makes strangling gesture*. And for future reference the stage probably needs to face away from the ginormous flat-fronted building ;)
I have to say a MASSIVE thank you (as one of the marshals) for all of the drivers who tirelessly went out time after time after time - Mark in the Viper, the guy in the Porsche whose name escapes me, the GranCabrio driver, the Daytona driver, the guy with the Westy and some of the 355's and Gallardos ... some of these guys must have had no more than an hours break all day. I know the red V8 Vantage did 16 runs I'm sure others did many more. HUGE HUGE thanks as at some points we were getting seriously low on cars and drivers, and you guys just kept on rocking up for more passengers. Awesome stuff. God knows how much fuel was used and I hope the Daytona got back without being nicked for running on canvas.
It looked like the queue was steady at about an hour long from 10:30 till 3:30, and it was a huge relief at the end to see it going down - by 4:30 we really had run out of cars but we were down to rides for the volunteers at that point so I think it was all good!
I am biased but a huge well done to PhN members for showing up and driving and also helping out with the marshalling. Special mention to Ivana, who did a sterling job with managing the queue. I think it was an excellent effort from "us" all round!
Finally, if anyone left behind a black, grey and red booster seat (I think it was made by GRACCO or something) then it's in lost property at Dunton - I think it came out of one of the grey Gallardo hardtops but I could be wrong. No idea if the guy was PhN or not, otherwise I would have taken it and brought it along to the Ace.
Oh, and thanks to the drivers who stayed to the end and give the volunteers a lift round. Nice touch - and greatly appreciated.

Got to apologise to one of the marshalls who asked for a ride at the end just as my 9 year daughter had got in who'd been waiting since 1pm! I did come back as I suggested but it looked like you'd gone out in another car by then as I couldn't find you. hope you got your well deserved ride if your on here!
The negatives of the day are useful to the organisers so that they can improve the event in future. From what I could tell the display area could do with being bigger so that there can be more for visitors to do and be organised in a slightly different way. In the pick up/ drop off area between the marshals we had a good system going. Maybe an extra person to help with the queue (going down the line to find people for cars that not everyone wanted to go in) to make sure we could fill all the cars, Ivana did an emense job with the queue and getting to the guys loading the cars. Having 2 people the whole day to load cars as well as another person to direct cars in the loading area as well as helping load cars as required.
Knowing what cars will be available when and for how long would also be useful so the marshals know how many cars will be available for rides. Having the four seater cars was useful for families etc who wanted to ride together.
Thanks to the driver who went to get more drivers when we were very short of cars. A big thank you to all the drivers, hope the guys that had car issues get them sorted soon.
Thank you to Nadine and Mark (Fatboy18) for driving all day. Both there from the beginning till the very end. Nadine your car is awesome thank you for the ride.
The rides at the end of the day was a nice touch as was the food and drink. The drink was especially needed due to the heat fro all the cars.
Overall the day seemed well organised and all the marshals were willing to help the visitors have a good day and get everything running smoothly.

Visited the fuel station 3 times during the day, used 2 1/2 Tanks :clap:
Totally worn out the front brake pads (EBC Reds) only been in the car 3 months :
And scrubbed the front tyres rather well :D

Hi spirit, yes it was me in the Noble,they call it Azure Blue, may have been a Lotus colour ? Car has done 28k miles now and been virtually faultless in my 3 1/2 years with it. First time it's been subjected to anything like that ,and I'm really chuffed how it ran ( virtually standard ) against Italys finest up to 130 ish after which sheer horsepower and aerodynamics came into play and off they went !(as did the yanks!) Managed a best of 142 ish in the middle of the day when it was a bit downwind.Had no silly temps( oil or water) even on my last of 13 runs right at the end of the day, no strange noises, fading brakes etc
Not sure about tyre wear, as I certainly wasn't losing grip at any point to scrub them, did manage 12 mpg including a very gentle round trip to Chelmsford in the middle of the day to get it up a bit!
One thing I did notice with some of the drivers that we were told to come off the banks and take both lanes as it effectively doubled the braking distances, however when I did it some were then coming across to straddle both as if I was trying to overtake,which certainly wasn't the case.
At risk of a long-winded post one thing will stick in my mind forever, and I choked up this morning telling a work colleague.One lad of about 14 got in my car and at first I thought he was maybe a bit deaf as he hadn't acknowledged my introducing myself, or my offer of a handshake. When he was buckled in by the marshall ( who did a fantastic job all day looking after the people and the cars) the lads dad knocked on my window to explain that his son had severe communication skills which explained why he had seemed to me to be so out of his comfort zone.All my pathetic attempts to break the barriers had failed for the 10 mins we were waiting to go on track.I then asked if he could do something for me and "press that button".Not pressing hard enough I asked him to do it again, and as the car fired into life he broke into a smile when it dawned on him what had happened. He looked at me and for the first time spoke without prompting saying very slowly" I started your car, I really started your car". To think that that tiny thing had an effect on him just told me all what the day was about, and I had real problems concentrating for those two laps, to the point where I parked the car afterwards and went for a walk to find my family and count my blessings.

My favourite moment of the day: Ivana asked me to find the car with the highest seat for a boy (looks around to see only ferraris and lamborghinis, scratches head) hopes of the quattroporte gone. Quick chat with couple of drivers and it was time for the services of sully. The look on the kids face when he came back in was great, looked like Nick made his day. Knowing we helped make some peoples day and raised money for an excellent charity made it all worth it.

Would like to give a massive thank you to all the people who organised the event and the marshalls for making it happen, was the most fun I have had for a while. Nothing negative to report from me from a drivers point of view, if I had been a visiter maybe a better static display would be good but I'm sure that will come with time.
While I am sure mine was the slowest car on track all of my passengers had a great time and none of them wanted a refund.:)
My only regret was not been able to give a whole day, had to leave about 3 o'clock, as it was I neglected my family and didn't really get round to meeting alot of the other drivers.
Next year will try for the whole day and help raise more for a good cause.

Took me a bit of getting used to and as a result of not getting good exit from the banking my straight speed was a bit compromised, so apologies if I slowed you down and got in your way…. I did say sorry to Nadine in the Daytona as I was in front of her on one run and could see that she was v quick!!!!! Still my passengers said they enjoyed the experience, which for me was the important bit…….

Hi Graham, in Maldon every weekend as my son trains and plays for Maldon Town! ( live in Little Baddow) Met a guy today at a family fun day in Broomfield that turned up in a Superformance Shelby Coupe just like last weeks star of the show. What are the chances of me seeing 2 out of the 12 in one week?I can sense a little mini meet coming on, he's only in Hatfield Peveral, and other than the Shelby he has a track prepped early E-type, a race derived XJS and a P1800s and all of them are for sale.
