The first breakfast club of the year and the theme is Tax-free Sunday - For all pre-1973 classics.

Bruce has an Alvis and

oh wait a minute, do they mean cars or people.
i'm a pre 1973 classic (probably the most polite way of putting it i suppose!)

BADGER, BADGER, BADGER, BADGER, BADGER!! did I mention the Baja is pre '73? I'll ask mark if there's any chance of rebuilding my engine by then and hopefully bring it along. Probably not quite the sort of classic they envisage ;-)

1. Harsh - classic old rusty body, oh and a car too.
2. Butters - No rust to be seen anywhere and not pre '73 either. :)
3. Fiona - 1969 Baja Beetle (hopefully, if not I'll blag it with the Sebring)

It's still in a barn at the moment, friend of mine owns it but hasnt really used it for a few years (1-2 rather than 10-20). Attempting to procure it and get it back on the road :)

Is anyone driving up from Somerset or that way?

Fiona
03-03-10, 12:55 PM
I'm having a few car issues at the moment.....

550 Spyder - under construction
Baja - cracked crank case
Sera - Over-heating
Sebring - Sound's like it's running on 2 cylinders, smoking and shooting flames from the exhaust

Why does it all have to happen at the same time

The Baja's at Dreamshack and Mark's chucking another engine in it this week so hopefully I can get down there and pick it up before sunday. Especially as it's 1969 so qualifies :thumb:

However, if all else fails, is there anyone who could give me a lift from Thorpe Park area? That's west London between staines and chertsey, close to the M25.

Heart says yes........ but wallet says hang on a mo :o

I think 2010 could well be a classic year for running with all the good ideas that have been thrown around lately so that's going to entail lots of miles which means more maintenance and costs so i'm going to try and be a little selective in this early part of the season as i don't want to run out of steam later in the year :)

Does that make any sense or just sound sensible and boring :leaving:

Nick, if I have a car on the road in time, it'll be the Baja......which doesn't do much more than 50mph. I see a Morris Traveller on the list too, so I feel this may not be the fastest of hoons. Or maybe the slow cars can take the direct route while the others take the more scenic route?

Fiona,

I'm sure I can pick you up and drop you home if you like?

Hmm, I think the Baja will stay air-cooled for reliability, especially in the hot countries he goes through. It's a thought for the Porsche, not sure if it'll fit though..... Probably best if I leave the engine stuff to Dreamshack and I stick to driving them :thumb:

Oh, I'm always thinking about where I can go next. I'd really like to do the Pan-american highway or a circuit of South America or the length of Africa. It's going to be a while before I have the time and money for another big trip though. I am thinking I may go and visit friends in Western Sahara next winter. They run fishing charters on the lagoon in Dahkla where the Sahara meets the Atlantic and also run off-road safari's in the desert. Thought I might take 3 or 4 weeks out to drive down there and do some off-roading in the Sahara :D

OK time for a little story. I have had the Ghibli SORN'ed and parked up in a secure underground car park space over the winter (the wheel arches are juuust starting to get a little bubbly and we know how much salt goes on the roads - well I was pretty much along the right lines there!).

Plan was to tax it today, wash all the dust off and join you guys tomorrow. However, it seems I might have overlooked a little detail called the MOT, which I thought ran till the end of the month but in fact expired on Wednesday.

Upshot? Car now stuck in underground car park, can't get tax without MOT, can't drive it to the MOT without Tax afaik. Currently waiting for AA Legal advice to get back to me with their suggestions!

"Bugger" :(

Fiona
06-03-10, 12:12 PM
I thought you were allowed to drive it to and from the test centre without road tax as long as you have it booked in for the test and can prove that's the only place you were going. I've done it a few times and I'm sure that's what i was told by the test centres.

Harsh
06-03-10, 12:13 PM
if you have prebooked an MOT you can legally drive it to the MOt station.

also if you buy tax online you can still drive it as long as you keep the receipt with you in the car.
go for it :)

Good to see a massive turnout on a very cold morning.

I think I have just about defrosted, I probably should have kept the roof up, but that'd have just been a bit odd - isn't that right Bachi? ;)

Lots of people I didn't managed to say hello to, so hello now :)

Had a good run leaving Goodwood with Bachi, Amit & Haroon - Am I the only one who spotted the Police car in a car park somewhere on the way back? Still as we stick to the speed limits all the time it wasn't a problem - but driving everywhere in first gear made for a loud journey :D

Nightmare for us...... Alecia was going to arrive at my house Sat night at 8..... she rang about 7.30 saying caouldnt start the car... battery has been playing up. So I went over to her's with some jumpleads...got car started and as we weer drinving over to my house I said that she can take car into Porsche on Monday and get battery replaced and also while she's at it get the car its 20,000 service and extend warranty. she then pulled out the tax disc ...and noticed it ran out end of feb..lol. so we turned round went back to her house to get some tax on line.... and yep you guessed it....no MOT. So Sunday was a non started unless I wanted to drive down in my boring V70.. Ended up in Swindon looking for a new Bike for me..

Car all booked in for MOT , service, warranty , Clean and anything else it needs... we were both gutted not to make it down seeing the sun was out! ... ohh well there's plenty other meets im sure!

I tell you what it was bloody cold, my hands took the rest of the day to thaw out! I hope Fiona got her video camera back and I'm looking forward to seeing the footage. I ended up leading a splinter group that turned left just before Midhurst to go along the A272 to Petworth and then on down to Goodwood. I prefer this way the roads are more fun!

One of the busiest Breakfast clubs I've been to in a while the range of cars was fantastic. I love the smell of old cars. The smell of leather and oil does something very strange to me :)

The camera had stopped recording after 30 minutes so didn't get the later stuff. No idea why, it behaved perfectly well for the rest of the day. Battery was fine and only half way through the tape - bizarre! I do have the Beetle shot though, I meant to put that in, not sure why it didn't make the cut although I was very tired so probably just forgot it.

Not planning another video or re-edit just yet but I expect I'll do a highlights one later in the year when I have footage from a few other meets so that and Amit's skid could well end up on there :D ....or maybe after Dunsfold I'll have enough "Ooops" moments to edit together a PN bloopers clip ;)

Thankfully the most spectacular spin, so far, by a PN member was not caught on camera :leaving:

I figured it must be something like that because the camera still seems fine. Mind you it survived the Sebrings suspension which is about as firm as they come and the grown up camera survived a spin on Bachi's atom!
