May 16th to 22nd - The Highland Fling Tour, Scotland

You don’t need to leave the UK to find spectacular scenery and stunning lightly trafficked true drivers roads.

Our Scottish tour proves that beyond all doubt. Extensive research and several fun filled ‘reconnaissance trips’ means that whilst this is our first customer tour you can be sure that what we’ve got in store for you are the very best roads that the British isles can offer.

We’ve chosen to run this tour in May in order to take advantage of the spring weather which gives us the best possible chance for dry roads whilst also avoiding the summer when the roads are clogged with tourists and the petrolheads nemsis, the dreaded caravan! We’ve got some great local hotels, the fuel stops are marked and of course you’ll have the benefit of a tour manager, sat nav files, walkie talkies and detailed route notes contained in our info packs. Due to the fact that we’ve shy’d away from faceless corporate hotels in favour of the friendly character venues we have to limit the numbers on this trip to just 15. At time of launch 5 places have already been booked by our regulars so hurry to avoid disappointment!

Tour itinerary

Day 1: The tour begins with lunch on the edge of the Lake District (with optional drive up from London). After lunch, we head on through the Lake District and over the Kirkstone Pass, before heading north past Glasgow airport and up to Loch Lomond, for our first night in a "haunted" coaching inn. (165 miles)

Day 2: Leaving Loch Lomond, we continue north past Loch Leven and Fort William to Eilean Donan Castle, and on to the Isle of Skye before our next hotel, near Torridon. (205 miles)

Day 3: After another fine Scottish breakfast we carry on up the western coast, enjoying the amazing scenery, mountains and twisting tarmac of the highlands. (160 miles)

Day 4: We hit the northern coast of Scotland in the morning, as far north as you can go on the mainland, before turning south again and stopping off at the Glenmorangie distillery around lunchtime, then heading further south to arrive at the Balmoral estate in time for a sumptuous traditional Scottish dinner for our last night in Scotland. (220 miles)

Day 5: Onwards and downwards, a dash across the border on our way to the Yorkshire Dales, where we will be spending the next two nights in the company of the hotel owner, a true petrolhead himself! (250 miles)

Day 6: A whole day to explore the Yorkshire Dales with planned routes in the morning and the afternoon before returning to our hotel for dinner and drinks. (variable, approx. 120 miles)

Day 7: Homeward bound! A gentle drive back home in the company of your new friends and the chance to reflect on a fantastic weeks driving.

What's included?
6 nights bed & breakfast, sat-nav files, walkie talkies and road books containing route information, and full services of the accompanying tour manager (lead car).

What's not included?
Lunch, dinner, fuel, tolls.

So how much does this cost?
Price per person, based on two people sharing a car and a twin or double room: £497

Details of our other tours will be available here

and on the other areas of the forum

(and how much it will cost... ouch.)

But I am thinking about Millau, Scandinavia and Alpine... or maybe Scotland and Alpine..
or maybe all of them...

Don't see that exact job description on the list but the IT department here is HUGE, way bigger than Studio Operations!!
There are 5 vacancies in "web technology" one of which is for a "web developer" if thats the same sort of thing?

Hey Tony :)

the cost is per person, but as this is a UK tour and there's no worries about tunnels/crossings etc
it's the same price, although you would be sharing with someone else if that's cool?

Hiya Harsh :wavey:

Sharing wouldn't be a problem as long as they didn't snore and had decent personal hygeine. Obviously though If it were to be a bloke I'd require separate beds!! Are there many single drivers going in the same situation?

I'll check with work tomorrow and also the bank manager (wife).

Final question then before I get my wallet out. What is the area like for fuel stops? My 350 will manage 180 odd on a tank with the sort of driving we'd be likely to do, how remote are most of the days in terms of finding a filling break before running out of fuel in the middle of no-where? I see a Tuscan has already booked in so presumably the owner will have a similar issue as me?

verysideways
15-03-10, 17:40 PM
Funnily enough fuel stops feature quite highly on the list of priorities in Scotland - there is one section where we do almost 160 miles between petrol stations. There is ONE petrol station along that stretch but it's unleaded and/or diesel only but you could always just put a couple of gallons in there to get you to the next fuel stop.
All the other fuel stops are Shell or equivalent (i.e. super unleaded available).

The fuel stop at the beginning of that stretch is marked on the satnav files as MANDATORY :D

Hi Jan - I know what you mean about that Alpine, one of the best weeks of my life TBH and I made some great friends. If this PN tour can be even half as good then I'll be a very happy man! Just a shame I don't think Scotland will be able to offer the same sort of weather :(.
Jamie got married last week (for which I was collared as best man) and so is unfortunately well under the thumb, especially where money is concerned and so won't be joining me on this one!

I don't want to tempt fate but the Scotland trip last July was highly amusing - it rained down south all week but Scotland was full of blue skies and sunshine...

Hi Guys,

I've just decided to take the plunge and join you good folks on this tour. I went to the Ace Cafe meet a couple of months ago and I think I met Harsh and Ben (I'm not the best with names so could be wrong!).

I'll be coming in my Clio Trophy so really looking forward to the twisties! I'll try to come to the meet on April 12th (it's my first day in a new job so might be difficult) so if anybody coming on the trip sports me arriving in the Trophy then come and say hi.

I'm based in London so will likely be on the long and early trip up from there!

P.S. I don't have a Tomtom or Garmin so will need to get one for this trip (fed up of my terrible HP anyway)...can anybody recommend me a good 'un?

Good to chat to you earlier, here's the link i promised (which i have also emailed to you).
http://www.satnav-discounts.co.uk/tomtom-go/tomtom_live_x50_550_750_950.htm

I'd suggest the 750 as the 550 only has UK maps and the price difference is minimal (the 950 adds US maps).

Oooh, getting excited now!!! :D

Hi Justin,
Welcome - this will be my first PN tour (though not first group tour) as well. I'll be heading up from Cambs but probably on the Saturday, staying at a b&b so I can see some of the lakes before hand, happy to convoy up if you fancy doing that instead.
As for Sat-Nav I have a TomTom 1 XL with full Euro maps and its a very good piece of kit, albeit the maps are now a little out of date on mine. It got me around Millau perfectly and has doena few other Euro and UK jaunts.

verysideways
22-03-10, 12:19 PM
New XL and so on don't do itinerary any more :(

Need the 550 as a minimum from the current range, though i have heard that you can hack the One and XL to bring itinerary planning back.
Annoying though ain't it?

zippee
22-03-10, 12:22 PM
Thats a pain! When I bought my XL it did pretty much everything the 550 etc did only without the price tag, though it's pretty obvious in that case why they've stripped it of some of the features.

there is a folder when you connect he tom tom to the pc click to open the device and you will see all the folders there is one called ITN just drag and drop streight into there. :)

Nick, have you tried this on a new XL?

There is no way of reaching the itns as the menu item is no longer available... the hacks that i have read about are all based on removing an item from the menus and replacing one icon with the "Itinerary" menu icon.

Hey guys,

I'm aiming to go on the Pistonheads Goodwood breakfast club run this Sunday morning so would be good to meet some guys..who's going along?

Also, I was thinking on going up the Lake District on Saturday morning with Tony and spending a day there before the main begins we may stay in the same place the tour kicks off for convenience. Would anybody else be interested in joining? Could have a separate convoy on the Saturday if so.

Looks like the pub has accomodation there plus they are having a "pirate day" fundraiser the saturday before in aid of the Alzheimers Society. Might be worth starting your holiday early and joining the err "collie wobbling" championship :D

I tried the Watermill too but as you say it is fully booked. I also tried a few hotels in nearby Windermere but they all had a clause that you had to spend 2 nights. Have booked the Holiday Inn, Lancaster in the end which is about 20 miles away.

I've had trouble finding places who will do one night for a single person for this area (seems a common problem). Eventually found one in Grange over Sands which is around 10 miles beyond Kendal. Nice easy trip to the tour start point.

Any of you that haven't booked yet, you need to get a move on. I have 3 places left...

Hi everybody

Looks like Barbara and me have missed out on this one - DAMN!

I couldn't book earlier because I didn't have a suitable car! My 997S (the one I used last year in France) was sold and I didn't think my 'work' runabout (an old Toyota Corolla) would exactly be appropriate. Great for delivering things though!

Anyway I'm now picking up my new Gen-II 997S/PDK next Friday and was looking forward to giving it a first good run in Scotland.... C'est la vie!

If there are no places left on tour, I'd be very tempted to catch up with you for a day's drive maybe. If you could let me have details of the route/schedule it'd be great to see everyone again.

Otherwise I hope everyone's well and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Final decision! :boing:

The Z4M and I are coming :boing:

Paul isn't :cuss:

Mr "I can't decide on a car" is changing cars again! He's sold the F430 and is getting a GTR

Problem is, it arrives on the 15th, it has to have its wrapping taken off and be detailed on the Monday and he has to get 1200 miles done under 3000 revs by the 22nd for the Optimisation service (only date he can get!), so Scotland is a no go for him :(

I may be bringing my Father instead, we need to see if we can get his cardio appointment rearranged from that week. He's in his 70's and his memory is going a bit, but he's a great old bloke to have around with a fabulous sense of humour and he loves Scotland - he spent many years up there doing his Merchant Navy engineering degrees.

If not, then I've got a couple of mates in mind, or will be on my own & Paul will join us in Yorkshire.

from the email, copy the .itn file to a folder on your pc (or the desktop whichever you prefer)

then connect your tom tom to the PC.
go to 'my computer' and you will see the tomtom icon displayed.

double click on it and you will see several folders.
one of them says.itn

open that and then drag and drop the .itn file you have saved on your pc into the tomtom.itn folder.

then disconnect the tomtom.
you can then find it via the tom tom on itinery planning just load it and go!

What a great week!

I really enjoyed myself, and couldn't have wished for a nicer bunch of people or better roads (with the possible exception of some of Friday morning).

I was convinced I'd come back wanting more power, but it turns out that what I really need is much better brakes. :D

I've uploaded the rest of my pictures (and a couple of videos of the fun outside the Inver Hotel), and they're available as a slideshow here:

Thanks to everyone who's uploaded pics too - I'm planning on putting a book together next month and will be in touch about using quite a few of those. I'll post the details as soon as it's compiled - www.BobBooks.co.uk (http://www.BobBooks.co.uk) aren't the cheapest, but their quality is fantastic.

Finally, a couple of people asked about the Advanced Driving forum I'm involved with. It's http://www.advanced-driving.co.uk/forum/ (http://www.advanced-driving.co.uk/forum/) - but you'll need to sign in to see the members-only area where we organise the driving days.

Ha!

What to do during a sudden downpour:

Step one: close side windows (do NOT use wipers!) :o

Step two: if use of wipers is unavoidable, lean forward in order to avoid being hit by water splashing over the windscreen (as seen in pictures)

Step three: enter Wet T-Shirt Contest :D

Step four: check sky and consider closing roof :leaving:

Step five: find open garage / stop under bridge etc

Step five (if no garage bridge is availale): get soaking wet whilst closing the roof.... :banghead:

Step six: throw away favourite driving gloves
