September 4th to 12th - The Alpine Tour, France/Italy/Switzerland

No yearly itinerary would be complete without our famous Alpine tour. 9 days of pure driving on the roads that real petrolheads dream of.

The famous Stelvio pass is the one everyone has heard of, but it’s not the best….we know there are much better roads and we’ll take you to them. The route Napoleon, Col de Turini (a Monte Carlo rally special stage), the San Bernadino pass (one of our favourites), the Fluellapass and the Julier pass to name but a few. We’ll also take you to the Black forest and show you why they are used as testing grounds by Ducati, you’ll see Lake Como and visit the Mille Miglia Museum. It’s the tour that everyone has to do once in their lifetime, although if you’ve done it once you’ll want to do it again and again!

We’ve made a couple of changes for 2010. We know that those who want to go to the Alps on a driving tour are focussed purely on the driving. You want the best roads possible and while you’re in the Alps you want to do as many passes as possible. So that is what we’ve created; a pure drivers tour. We’ve dispensed with the unnecessary expense of 5 star spa hotels and concentrated on getting to as many of the best roads as possible. Don’t think though that this is going to be a Spartan bare boards tour, it isn’t the hotels are still of a high standard with secure parking for our cars and have been chosen because of their location and friendly atmosphere. We’re aware that you want to drive and where you lay your head is of secondary importance, so why pay for something you wont use?

That said, we’ve included dinner on 4 out of the 8 nights you’ll still get the benefit of 2 tour support cars and two tour managers, our Sat nav files, loan of our powerful walkie talkies, detailed route notes and drivers info pack. So if you want to get out and drive and make the most of your time there, then this is the tour for you.
It is a full on tour, however if on any day you wish to miss out certain passes and head straight to the next hotel we’ll help you do that. We’ve also got two nights at the top of Stelvio so if you want a complete rest you can have that too. However, once you’re on tour the chances are you’ll want to take every opportunity to drive the magnificent alpine roads…but the choice is yours!

Once again numbers are limited and we’ve already had repeat bookings from last year so hurry up and book now!

After looking at the pics from the last Alpine Tour you can certainly add me to the provisional list!! Defo needs to be done.

Do you have an idea when in September it will be? I assume earlier for better weather?

Harsh

The weather down there is fine across the whole of sept.

it'll be timed to ensure the least amount of traffic possible so we can get the best out of the roads.

good choice of tour by the way ;)

the only problem i see doing it in September is that I have a long wait ahead... sigh...

Couple of my mates are also very keen so should have 3 or 4 cars between us...

Bachi & previous Alpiners! I need your help!

Quick question...Would a "non car" nut, aka the other half, enjoy this trip do you think? I've mentioned a road-trip to the Alps to her & she's incredibly excited & although I think the B.A.S.E trip would be more her thing, it's not feasible for us at that point in the year :(

I'm half hoping I won't be boring her to death on the Alps one...Obviously the scenery is the big draw for her, but will there be any other little treasures that would appeal to a non-car nut?

Appreciate anything to help me out on this one!

Either way, the deposits coming over tonight! & whatever happens, whether I'm going solo or having a gorgeous young lady tag along, I'll be there! :driving:

Harsh
30-12-09, 20:46 PM
The scenary is a big big draw, those stunning swiss villages, the view from the route Napoleon, the fact that we're in a swiss chalet for 2 nights at the top of Stelvio pass..

add to that the fact that she can have a banter with people on the walkie talkies, a chat and a drink in the evenings, (drive the car if you're both insured)

the fact that this tour is aimed at the hooner means there's less but that doesn't mean a non petrolhead wont enjoy it.

we've had a number come along in the past and most have been converted by day 3!

if the other half enjoys going for drives then she'll adore this.

ironictwist

Sold.

Cheers Bachi...That's EXACTLY what I needed to hear. We're touring Scotland the month before & timing it to clash with the Edinburgh Arts festival too so the Alps has some competition for road trip of the year :D

You see i'd suggest the LMC tour for someone who wants to bring a "non car-nut" on a tour in 2010...

We start off with the ferry to Spain, go across northern Spain, then through Andorra and the Pyrenees on the way to 2500 year old Carcassonne, then spend two nights and a day in the Dordogne before heading up to Le Mans for a weekend of "gentleman's racing". No long driving days, amazing weather and scenery all but guaranteed, and some time to explore the localities on the way.

Bu then maybe that's just me :D

I would agree Pete,
i might have got it wrong but i though that didnt work in terms of the time of year?

verysideways

I'm guessing the Scotland tour you're going on is August right? So, you could do LMC in early July or Alpine in September.

Or both of course :)

My other half is coming along as co-pilot, even though she is not a complete car nut. Having said that, not sure how much of the driving I will pass over as i want to do most of it!! ;-) Her primary job therefore will be camea and video girl...

The main reason she wants to come along is due to the stuning views and the banter in the evenings...

Also HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone on here and lets hope for some good weather in the coming 12 months for all the driving events...

Now to crack open a nice bottle of wine

You know reading the description..I would've thought the same! Nevermind, If I do exceptional bonus wise I'd like to be able to go for one of the earlier tours but we will see :)

For the mo, the Alpine's a definite!

Hehe that's the plan I was thinking for the Madamoiselle also. I know she'll enjoy nabbing my camera & will end up using it more than I will I imagine, seeing as I'll be lumbered driving ;) Not that I mind...It's nice to be chauffeured occasionally though!

Unfortunately she's not driving at the mo, still amidst lessons...I fear a Chimaera (Which will be the intended vehicle for this little foray come that point in the year) would scare her just a tad!

Appreciate the post though! :cheers2:

A Chim with PAS and a recent clutch is actually a really easy car to drive - as long as you're not pushing it.

Loads of torque, not a huge car, and very comfy ;)

Are we sure we want to go back to Swistland. Record fine for doing 35kmh above speed limit. £180000 OMG

Scary numbers...but as long as we're careful in the villages we should be fine.

The passes are fun enough at the speed limit anyway so speeding isn't a requirement to have fun.

maybe we should all go in MX5's ...that would be a real hoot at below the limit

I spent a few hours behind bars in Switzerland for "allegedly" speeding back in 2002.
Since they couldn't prove it was definitely me they had to let me go, but they did escort me to the German border...

Can someone help me, got a few questions to ask.

Ok i've been waiting on the money and cash flow coming in and it been sorted out so i was thinking about instead of 2011 tour, do the tour this year.

So got some questions

I live up in scotland, got 2 ways of getting to calais, drive to dover stay over night and get on the boat or get on the ferry in rosyth and get the overnight ferry to zeebrugge and bolt it over to calais, i would arrive in zeebrugge at 5am so should make it to calais in time hopefully.

Dover would mean i get to calais in the same area as the meet point but zeebrugge means i only have to travel 40mins to the ferry and be fresh for the days ahead.

Grangemouth (scotland) to dover is 8h 30m or Grangemouth to rosyth 33mins with a overnight ferry to zeebrugge then another 1hour on the otherside from zeebrugge to calais

verysideways
30-03-10, 18:04 PM
You'd miss the first driver briefing (near Folkestone) but i'd suggest that if you could arrive in Zeebrugge at 5am you'll very easily get to Calais before us :)
How much is the petrol and overnight stop, versus the zeebrugge ferry?

And how would you get back?

Cunno
30-03-10, 18:32 PM
No brainer for me, get the ferry.

Harsh's briefings are a bit dull at the best of times;) just remenber to drive on the wrong side of the road and you'll be fine:clap:

Robert Burns
30-03-10, 18:36 PM
The car can do about 300miles of motorway in 1 tank so it would take about 2 and a wee bit.

But the problem that is google maps says its 8hours 30mins but i've done grangemouth to southend and i can leave southend at abotu 7am and be hope in scotland for the back of 10pm so its over a 12hour drive to dover

the ferry would be £500 to get to zeebrugge

on te trip down where would people suggest i stop, as i don't want my car gone in the morning

there are plenty of safe places to stop, although one thought is the hotel we normally use to give the driver breifings which is about 10 mins drive from the Tunnel.

You could travel down the day before, stay in the hotel (some people do that anyway) and be fresh and ready for the briefing in the morning.

Harsh I have a question mate. I have never been to the Alps, however I'm guessing petrol stations are quite far apart? How have people coped on past tours in terms of fuel, I think I get around 250 miles to a tank when I drive it "moderately".

That's about 100 miles further than lots of other people, you'll be fine ;)

Wiggwam
08-04-10, 18:43 PM
Phew... I am around the 230 mile mark before the light comes on (based on my overall average for the last 9k miles that is) so won't be expecting much more than 175 miles per tank in the Alps... can stretch it to 270 miles if I am really really good though... but lets face it, that is never going to happen... :D

Harsh
08-04-10, 18:56 PM
We ran a tour for the Atom club back in 2008 and has to take into account that some Atoms could only manage 120 miles on a tank, similar to the Caterhams and Atoms that came to the Alps with us last year. so we're used to fuelling requirements.

The best practice is to fill up every time we stop for a break to ensure you're always close to full, but there are a lot of fuel stations on most of the route.

we also suggest filling up before arriving at the hotel for the night so that in the morning we can leave and not then spend 30 mins in a fuel station!

Been discussing tactics for the night before departure with Wiggwam and V8Miller. Reckon we'll be staying the night in the hotel where the driver briefing is. Any chance we can be told which hotel it is?!

Who else will be, out of interest?

£500 for the ferry? Sod that, drive down :)

The hotel is the Mercure in Hythe:

A few things that i've been trying to work out in my head is. How do a 1 person pay at the tools when its the wrong side of the wrong toll in france and is it true that the french take your avg speed between tolls

Fiona
09-04-10, 17:20 PM
Well, when it happens to me they usually give me a thumbs up and wave me on through :D
Otherwise its a case of jump out and run round as I have to do with the swipe card barriers at work.
Or you could come to an arrangement with the car in front to pay yours aswell.

we tend to have a re group around the toll area so a few extra moments shouldn't be too much of an issue

Alternatively you could do what some of the guys on the Atom tour did, spin the car and reverse through the tolls.

A more sensible suggestion is to get yourself an auto toll device a 'sanef peage'
as far as i know, it's free and simply debits the tolls off your card(which you register on their site)

Yep usually either lean over and get a gear stick up the wrong way or walk around the car. To be honest I like getting out as s it gives you a quick chance to stretch the legs :D

Thanks for the above comments in relation to my question, I should be ok for fuel then :)

So it seems that the vast majority of us will be going through the tolls backwards, a fantastic solution to one of lifes great problems. I will also be looking to stop at the hotel overnight as I'll be coming down from Leeds.

Its going to be a long 5 months waiting for this epic adventure, I can't wait.

i've already made up an extendable arm it moves in fingers and i can open and close the palm, just needs to test it more at work, its got a few problems, i could actually sell this.

make it for pistonheads so its made out of carbon fibre, it can also slap people who drive on the wrong side of the road

This might not be such a bad idea! I've looked into this in the past and it wasn't that cost effective however they seem to have changed it now. From another site:

"The Liber-t system costs €30 for the badge (which is refunded should you ever stop needing it) and there is a monthly charge of €2. This €2 is charged via your bank account/credit card but only for those months that you actually use the system. Signing up for Télépéage Liber-t is fairly straightforward although the SANEF website is only in French. The application form is available here (http://www.sanef.com/fr/ecommerce/pdf/contrat_particuliers.pdf)."

EDIT: Have emailed my brother (a french resident!) to get more info for me. From experience there maybe a "better" way to get these!!

verysideways
03-06-10, 23:31 PM
The hotel is the Mercure in Hythe, and the drivers' briefing includes bacon sandwiches, tea, and coffee :)

Everyone needs to be at the drivers' briefing so that we can go over some useful information, discuss the protocols we try to adhere to, and so we can hand out route notes and radios. It also gives everyone a chance to meet. Once we actually get on the train we may or may not be grouped together (especially since there are 26 cars going!) and having a drivers' briefing in the train is not an option!

It's only 10 minutes up the road from Folkestone anyway ;)

V8Miller

As the briefing includes food you can count me in :D

Brahman
04-06-10, 04:36 AM
All briefings form an important and intrinsic element of PhN tours and day 1 allows you to.

1. Scoff bacon sarnies.
2.Get the group mobile phone sheet so if anything 'sheeet' happens & your flying solo, as well as 3 tour manager's phone no's, you also have 28 more numbers to call round as well.
3. Scoff more sarnies.
4. Receive your radio comms and headsets.
5. Scoff more sarnies as needed.

Each briefing is when you get the daily updates & amendments: road closures, weather conditions, known BiB hotspots (you don't put 84k on a Cerb without taking some notes along the way ;) any additional fuel stops etc etc. Although the day one route is easy enough as it's 'straight, yep straight a bit more, left at the roundabout, 'HOTEL!!' by day 6 we're crossing 2 borders via a dozen passes at 6-7k feet and you can then appreciate the alarm going off at silly o'clock and getting the info that means you don't up in Austria or worse, a Swiss motorway <shudder>.

Plus of course, 3 PN crew standing there saying 'Start your engines' to an empty car park makes us look very foolish. :)

Anyway, it's well past three, Pete n Ben will be here in 5 hours to collect the Truck and I loathe IIS/ASP server support and their clients for sh!tty markup and instructs on an XML job, especially as I can and do run the same thing regularly in Unix/PHP using a smashing Python script and it takes 4-5 hours less. ..... Remember the rain? The rolling roadblock of very angry Swiss police types? The bridge? The furious young lady police type who wanted to impound the Diablo, Cerbs and the M for good measure as she mistakenly believed we had hovered above the posted limit? Remember how much the fine and compulsory purchase of a vignette was? I seem to recall bout 35E? The same as buying one in advance***. Class. At least they blocked the roads back to the on-ramp to let us on our way in convoy. :)

Anyone able to give a sat nav idiot a bit of help?

I've got my garmin out and got the poi software loaded. I unzipped the garmin points into a folder called trip and they are RTE files, when i try to upload the poi's i get a error

There are no data files in that directory. Please specify a directory that contains at least one file with a .csv or .gpx extension

What the hell im i doing wrong?

Robert Burns
05-08-10, 19:00 PM
Found the problem, with my garmin sat nav only taking .csv or .gpx files. I looked at the tomtom files and the navman files, the navman files are .csv so i used them, only think is are the links the wrong way round, should the garmin be navman and the mavman be garmin?

Max

Hi Robert,

Different sat navs use different files:
Tomtom use itn files
Navman use csv files
Garmins use all sorts of different things, depending on model - some of them use csv, some gpx, some rte.

If anyone needs a specific format i'm happy to supply it if i can...

Just a quick bit of advice if I may, what are the quality of the roads like in Europe? I would like to lower the car considerably prior to the trip and have the wheels aligned to improve the handling. Im looking at a 30mm drop, would this cause me problems on the roads over there or even getting onto the euro tunnel itself?

Max
10-08-10, 20:42 PM
I've only really driven in France but the quality of the motorways, A & B roads is usually fantastic. Soo smooth, they put our roads to shame. There are the occasional bad roads but usually very small country roads or small city streets. The French Alps roads are usually OK too BUT there are some seriously sharp hairpins which could be a problem for a low car!

Re the Eurotunnel - depending on how low the car is already, lowering even more there may be a problem if we have to go on the top deck!

Might be worth asking the same questions on PH?

verysideways
10-08-10, 20:44 PM
If you're not lowering further than a GT3 then you'll be fine, as there is a GT3 coming :-)

only road in Austria and Italy I ever had trouble with low flying car was on the 'down' road from top of Stelvio, thats the one you see in most pics, all other cols and passes never a prob. and that includes on and off ferry's and trains, I try run all my cars with 110mm front clearance, thats not the ride hight just the splitter clearance. The brake coolers on GT3's are lower than front splitter and more expensive, mine get trashed all the time.

vetteheadracer
12-08-10, 16:52 PM
If the Frenchies think I'm drilling holes on the front of my Lotus to attach the front plate, they are sadly mistaken.........

.......on the subject of ride heights the problem with Stelvio is more the front overhang i.e. a certain Orange Diablo had to pretty much stop at each hairpin to raise the noise to stop it dragging on the ground!

The secret is to go out wide for the corners, but this can be a bit difficult if you happen to meet something coming the other way at the corners.

The rest of the roads shouldn't be a problem unless you are very wide.........

bobsan
12-08-10, 16:59 PM
crossed from another forum:

And dont forget , when in france and maybe other countries, the safety vest must be inside the car and handy for you to put on before you get out of the car.

French police have been pulling over cars, inviting you to get out and when you get out sans warning vest then giving you a fine......

what's happening in Europe this week...............well one thing.................thousands of French, Italians & Germans are heading home as what is general regarded as the holiday season draws to a close. This of course would leave the roads relatively free to anyone wishing to partake in a spot of unhindered driving.

Been getting the car prep done this weekend, washed and polished, new tyres etc. Will be taking some spare rear brake pads with me as they're getting close to the limit, and Porsche didn't have any in stock, so orded, but may not turn up to Thursday.

So Pete will you be bring any trolley jacks in the support car, or do I need to pack my own?

Cunno.

Just got back from a weekend in France and despite driving a diesel Twingo the roads were brilliant. Can't wait to get back.

Now counting the sleeps!

Well that should just about cover your bar bill for the first night......no MOT here either, or V5 at this moment in time come to think of it!

Post office offered be the worst rate of my town center, the local travel angets had a good offer but the new cheque center was the best

Using debit card isn't that hard on the exchange rates though?

Yeah not great but difference isn't huge in the scheme of things.

Question - Notice we will be travelling close to Monaco on day 4 and a couple of us would love to drive through and see the sites, try to look cool *cough* show off *cough*. Will there be enough time during this day? Thanks :D

I have copied my sat nav files into my tom tom 750. When the sat nav is plugged into the computer they show up as routes, however how do I get the tom tom to follow that route? Am I missing something obvious, I have never used route files before and only bought the sat nav yesterday.

My apologies for being a bit thick on the subject

Without looking at mine I beleive you need to choose "Itinerary" where you can choose to load the individual files.
