View Full Version : I want a new toy

For those of you who have known me for a while, you will know that I have been humming and hawing for ages over potentially trading the S2000 for something else. The problem has always been, what else?
I toyed with a Noble - and liked it, but was scared off by the cost of maintaining it and was troubled by the fact it wasn't convertible. I test drove a couple of Corvettes and a Nissan 350Z - but neither felt right. A Mustang convertible was suggested but I don't actually need four seats and as much as I like American Muscle, it wasn't the American Muscle I was after (it suits Swerni, I don't think it would suit little me).
Yesterday, I saw it. I saw the answer to my conundrum.
A Viper SRT-10 Convertible - black, 8.3L of pure gorgeousness, with a rumbling bassline that could make your eyes water.
So, I am now on a mission to find out as much about it as I can, and I am on a hunt to find the perfect Viper. I am thinking 2003 or newer, black with orange stripes. Oh, and I am also trying to figure out how I am going to afford it.
What do you think?

Well Nancy I have to say it's a fantastic choice as long as you have a large enough parking space for one as it's probably a good 30% larger all round over the S2000.
Go for it, do it and defo a black one to boot!
The last revisions in the form SRT-10 would be the ones to go for but am pretty sure the latest revision only came in last year which will be a bit pricey. I think the major facelift came in 2003 from the curvy blob to the more sleek and modern front end. They're definitely a performance bargain once a few years old...
Keep us posted, sounds awesome!
Oh and you have to take me out for a spin when 'IT' arrives. :coolgleamA:

Fortunately, parking isn't a problem while I am living in my current house, although unless I do some serious hedge trimming I doubt it would go in the garage. It was the new shape that I just loved yesterday and I think that is what sold me on it. It's just finding one at the right price which is going to be a challenge (but a rather nice challenge...)
The one I saw yesterday had been brought in directly from the States. When we were looking at Corvettes that seemed to be the cheapest way to do it, although that might not be the case so much now with the exchange rate.
Ah, the hunt to find the perfect car....

That's half the fun Nancy and I swear the reason why I have had so many cars in my years of driving. I absolutely love the challenge of finding the right car...
Good luck with it...
James. :)
I imported my Baja from California when it was $2 to £1.
Shipping cost me £1000 all in. That was around £850 for the shipping (ro-ro is cheapest option) and the rest was duty.
Duty is a killer as it is charged on the shipping charge and the value of your vehicle (based on your receipt) Mine was very low because one of my friend in California bought it for me and wrote a letter for customs stating that he donated it to me for a nominal amount of $50 because I was using it for a charity event.
It also only cost me £50 to UK reg it because of it's historic status, not sure what it would be on a modern car. Also consider that shipping will be cheaper from the East coast. West coast shipping costs more because of the Panama canal fees.
Good Luck! Look forward to seeing/hearing it! Maybe Dede Seward would help you find one over there? She's on your facebook friends right?
Found one!
Mind you, you would need to also buy a trailer - this one isn't street legal!

I have a new can opener and an umbrella if it helps. :)
rented a viper for a week when in the states for a trip from NYC to DC back in 2002. Drove really well, but a bit too tail happy for normal roads when it got a little bumpy. Great on american roads that are mainly striaght and wide! Great acceleration and massive low end torque. Depends if it will be mainly a track car or actually use it day to day.

It will be a day to day car (although I tend to only drive a couple of days a week anyway). Tail happy doesn't bother me - I drive an S2000! Although that is a little tail whereas the Viper has a rather big tail...
so what you're saying is you want a bigger butt?
you're not a proper girl are you?
Does the s2000 have an LSD? Can you keep both? I cant really imagine going to the shops in the viper really being practical, try getting into waitrose car park on finchley road and I will eat my hat! (not that I have a hat but the point still stands!)
Harsh, your obsesed with her butt are you now? ....
not as much as she is (hmmm maybe she is a proper girl after all ;) )
indeed not really a practical car at all, but then if she wants something small to drive around in there's always the Atom.
oh wait a minute what have i just said?

Two things:
(i) You absolute bastard! I have been quietly lusting after one of those wee beasties ever since hearing it had better fuel economy than my Cobra. They do look fabulous don't they? I couldn't imagine having a coupe version...
(ii) Stay away from Sovereign Cars. They have some mighty tasty looking replicas in stock but my customer experience was hideous. I'm not going to splash the details over this thread so let's just say "Allow me to save you some trouble" :)
Anyway, back to the new steed - bagsy first drive after Nancy (I've read the thread and no-one posted before me ;)) Let's hope it has adjustable seats though :D (private joke). Black with orange stripes sounds cool - got any example pictures anyone?

Is that because the was ending up with a smaller and smaller share of the others after they had been split down the middle so many times?

Found a picture but couldn't find one in the right colour combo so this is the best car porn I can come up with at short notice. Well, actually no it's not - you'd be surprised what comes up in Google under "viper convertible black"! Anywho..... some nice wallpaper:

Where is the transmission on the new one, middle? If it is then could I suggest looking at the corvette too, its a bit more nicely balanced weight wise front vs back as they moved the transmission to the rear. Not too much mind so you will still get some rear end thrills!

Tried a vette and the only one I liked was the Z06 but that didn't come as a convertible, so no good. I like the look of the Corvette, but not as much as the Viper...

Nice, but a bit steep. Plenty of very nice cars around for half the money, or even less...
