View Full Version : Sat Nav's, Video Cameras and walkie talkies
Guys, just so we can make sure everyone is covered.
Can you let us know which make of Sat Nav you use and if you have any Walkie Talkies (and what sort)
We will provide Walkie Talkies for those that dont have them, but if you have your own and like using it then let us know so we can make sure it's compatible with the ones we have.
We will be providing route notes in addition to the sat nav files but we do recommend you have something like a TOM TOM with european mapping to make the best of the trip.
with regards to Video Cameras, this is not a filmed tour so we wont have a camera crew along with us but we will be using some bullet cams and normal video cameras.
if you dont have your own video equipment we can put you in touch with a couple of guys we have worked with in the past to organise a set up for your car.

i have the standard Mercedes Command satnav which doesn't allow any sort of upload, and i can't see a way of inputting GPS co-ords either. Karen will be bringing a Garmin portable satnav but need to find out the model and whether it has euro mapping.
no walkie talkies or video equipment and will only have fairly basic stills cam. what sort of video setup can i get Harsh? what sort of money are we talking?

Are you taking the Atom and a Darth outfit? Feel the need to do something, given we are not stickering up. Need some more attention. Its all about me. Blah blah blah... :D
Whether or not I wear the Leia bikini will depend on how much weight I can lose in the run-up... :cheers2:

Back on topic for a minute.
Has the subject of live tracking been discussed?
I have a system which allows me to do so.

If anyone from PN is interested give me a shout.

Looks fab, I remember Robin sharing your stories with us a while back.
I'm currently using a FirePin (http://firepin.com/) app on my iPhone... would be good to get your thoughts on the differences or pros 'n' cons good sir.

That looks like a bit more of a 'professional' system than mine, we decided we wanted to do something specific so wrote an app for both java and windows mobile based phones to talk with GPS and update live info over GPRS. I guess it depends what you want to do, at the time we used ours there was no real alternative available (2006) and we outputted both live to a google map image over http and also a .kml for people to follow us within google earth. Updating our location every 2-5seconds.
Find me at the Ace and I'll gladly explain about it some more, alternatively give me a call.

Meanwhile back at the ranch.....
On the subject of sat navs and walkie talkies I have one of the latest Garmin Nuvi jobbies. I've checked and this one *does* accept itinerary files. I should be able to convert any TomTom files ok. I don't have a walkie talkie and to be honest it wouldn't really work in my car so I won't bother borrowing anyone else's :)
Nav Unit:
Old TomTom 910 - I can load OV2 or routes in regular Tomtom .itn format.
Radio:
The Yaesu FT990 wont go under the dash, and no walkie talkies.
Cam:
If I can get a mount made in time - filming in HD with the Sony.

Quick question for you SatNav pros - anyone know how to upload route files to a Garmin Nuvi? I've got the 760 so a fairly new one that deffo supports routes. I have the Garmin RoadTrip application which allows me to construct routes and upload them but only in .gpx format. Is there an application that converts files to .gpx format from other popular formats or am I only able to plan routes in RoadTrip and then upload them? As you can probably tell I'm a little bit confused so any hints greatly appreciated :)
Andy
the route files will be available for TomTom, Garmin and Navman in the correct formats.
Fear not mate :)

Sorry guys, I've been a bit slow on the uptake with this one. I have a Tom Tom One with European maps and camera alerts. Unfortunately no walkie talkie so if you are able to provide one that would be fantastic. As for cameras I will be bringing my Girlfriend who is a freelance photographer with some of her kit so I'll be hanging her out the window to get some cracking rolling shots. :-) She doesnt know it yet!
James. :)

Cheers, as a NavMan user, I guess I upload as a POI then create a custom route based on the POI's...not used SatNav for ages.
Out of interest do any of the recent SatNavs allow routes to be created on AutoRoute etc and drag/dropped/imported as a specific route, if so which ones
Quick one for the Sat Nav stuff then. . .
How do I get it on to the (borrowed) Tom Tom?
The links that Robin sent display a page with "stuff" on, but it's not a downloadable file - unless I'm being stoooopid?
What happens next? :D

Thats what i did,
Loaded in the POIs, then created a multi stop trip using all the POIs in each day, saved them per day for easy access. Hope they work :D
I'm technologically retarded :D
Done that - need to dump to Laptop or something, but I'll do that later.
Then what? - In the most simplified / patronising style available please ;)

Right click each linky, save them to a folder on running laptop.
Connect tomtom to PC, turn on tomtom power
IF asked, select 'connect to computer'.
If you have Tomtom Home application it will start, just close it but don't disconnect the tomtom device or do anything else.
Open My Computer, navigate to the D: drive, or whatever drive 'Tomtom' shows up as.
Open the tomtom flash drive, open the folder named ITN.
Copy all the .itn files into the ITN folder.
Alternate method:-
Remove tomtom SD card, pop in a reader on the laptop, copy PN .itn files to the ITN folder on Tomtom.
Pop card back into Tomtom.
Then, reboot tomtom.
Navigate the menus to route planning, locate 'load itinerary', select day one.
Good to go Dan.
Cheers,
Steve Lesson
Cool - I'll try it later, if it fecks up, one of you lovely people will be able to do it for me on the train :D
Cheers :)
