Mobile Version of PN Forum

Came over all techy today and installed a style mod for the forum so that users accessing the site using mobile devices/pda etc will be served an alternative 'lite' style making it easier to use and post 'on the go' :-)

So being technologically retarded as I am, how does this work then?

Does my clever little MDA phone thing just "know" what to do or is there a different web address to go via?

Very basically.....

When you access any website the browser identifies itself to the site. So Internet Explorer is 'IE' and Firefox is 'FF' etc. For mobile browsers they identify themselves in the same way but as a mobile version. The PN forum script reads the browser type being used and if it is a PC browser it serves the normal default style but if a mobile browser is identified then the script serves a 'lite' mobile version of the CSS file. There's no user input needed as the script recognises the platform and serves the correct file.

I'm itching to try this pda version but my blackberry rip off is only connecting to Edge in Brazil and it isnt even doing that properly so i guess i'll wait until i'm home

I've no idea how all this works but it is pretty cool.

i'll see if i can figure out how to use the net on mu phone at some point...
not sure if i should do that before or after i work out how to make a phone call with it though.

joking aside though this will make it much easier for us to chat on here in the future and for the layman, what robin has done is pretty clever and it does mean we can be connected to PN whenever we like :)

I was wondering why the hell the forum had suddenly gone bonkers! Any chance of exempting iPhones as I find the original style easier to browse? (There's always one isn't there?!)
