View Full Version : What is going on with Pistonheads?
Dunno if we're allowed to talk about the other PH, but I have to ask - WTF is going on with Pistonheads at the moment?
I'll explain.
A new (usually UK) car company launches a new supercar and it instantly gets pounced on as being crap, will never arrive, no one will ever buy, doesn't look right, is too expensive, should be a sub £20k car, is too heavy, not heavy enough, not a Veyron, not a BMW, not a Lotus, destined never to make it to market, "I won't buy it", and then some witty fucker (pardon my language) posts the Sniff Petrol PR sheet with the various multiple options. Its a self fulfilling prophecy. They will never produce anything because they get kicked in the bollocks from the start.
or
Something brings Ferrari to the fore, either a new Ferrari on the horizon or someone who aspires to a Ferrari, or someone buys a Ferrari, and we get subjected to hundreds of posts "But why didn't you buy an M5?" "A BMW does everything the Ferrari does but isn't a Ferrari". I mean - WHO GIVES A F? If someone wants a Ferrari let them buy one.
or the most recent one
Lotus shows an Evaporator at a dealership, and it gets laid into with its too heavy, its not an Elise, its too much like an Elise, its doesn't look right, 280bhp isn't enough, £50k is too much, its not as good as a Veyron, "i'd buy an M5", "I think its shit", Lotus need to do a sub £20k car, Lotus need to get some inspiration from its dead founder....
another one
A car company tries to go faster than the Veyron and we get "whats the point? The Veyron is so much better", "its American", "I would get a Veyron", "Bet it wouldn't handle like a Veyron", my schoolboy physics says that xyz performance isn't possible, an M5 is better value, its interior is shit, its not the sort of car you can take shopping is it, etc.
Seriously, what is going on with PH? Seems to be far too many knobs who don't cheer on the latest and greatest in the motoring world......
Grrrrr.

tinman - I blame the kids!!
or should it be the parents?
Seriously though I think these days it's becoming the home of keyboard warriors most of whom haven't been near a serious car and rely on press/interweb for their oppinions.
Whereas those who have are more appreciative of all cars/makes models tend to be slightly older and therefore more receptive to others oppinions.
For example I could only afford a Ford Focus, which a lot of PHrs would dismiss (it's a ford, it's a focus, should have bought a veyron/TVR/M5 etc etc etc) but those who saw it on runs, track, europe apprciated why it was bought!!
I could only afford a Ford Focus
Really? Focus's are sh1t though. Why didnt buy an M5? You could have picked up a nice 2nd hand M5 for that money, which is far better.

Alot of it's down to people these days seem to enjoy being negative about things, rather than actually enjoy what they have and let others do the same..
Not sure what it's reason is, is it the general pessimistic british culture, working class envy, know-all shed mechanics, too much online top-trump style figures ?

I totally agree, there are far too many negative comments about. I bought a Boxster which is my pride and joy, and all you get from people (usually 18yr old corsa/fiesta/106 boy racer owners) is........why didnt you buy a 911, id have gone and got the turbo. Are these people educated at all? I would indeed have bought a 911 turbo if I had 90K to spend on a car, however I dont and 35K is enough for me. It seems that the people who do all the negative commenting on peoples cars are those that have never been in the position of spending serious money on cars and simply dream about having unlimited funds.
PH does make me laught at times, Ferrari/lambo/porsche/TVR/lotus and a few other sections are shown as having the most views however probably account for 1% of all cars on the road, quite clearly most viewed by dreamers and not reflected by the amount of owners.
I notice above about "why buy a Ferrari when a BMW does what a Ferrari does".............I mean which idiot really posts this rubbish, people who buy Ferraris buy from the heart, clear jealousy.
To be honest I blame motoring critics and society in general, it seems that if you have something desirable or nice then people who dont have it just says its rubbish and try to slate it.
Thats my point. A current argument, the one about yank cars and some guy tells everyone that there is no way that a Mustang GT could keep up with a hot hatch on a lane. His driving experience - an auto GT-H in SanFran. How far removed can you get??
Too many prejudices and know nothings going on.

Exact the same thing is happening in Holland, don't know why but it's prettiy irritating.
Most of the people say things based on nothing, or on the story of your local car magazine :S

Okay, here is my extra effort to try and post more (bringing to the attention of Bachi-lol) :D
I have been venturing into the wider forums on PH and the same thing keeps coming up - kids in fiestas/saxos/corsas/etc.... who seem to want to have a down on anyone else who doesn't drive a fiestas/saxos/corsas/etc....
For example with the Boxster - you can always have the opinion(that's your choice) that you brought a Boxter because you can't afford a 997 well, surely the same can be said for;
A Ferrari F430 because you can't afford a F430 Scuderia
A Lambo Gallardo because you can't afford a Lambo Murcielago
A Lambo Murcielago because you can't afford a Reventón
A Reventón because you can't afford a Veyron
A M3 Saloon because you can't afford a M5 (had to add that one):smilielol5:
Where does it stop & it's all just cr#p - and the people who write this junk; are they really trying to say that they wouldn't swap the fiestas/saxos/corsas/etc....that they drive for a; Boxster/F430/Gallardo/etc...come on guys - leave the green eyed monster behind!
:toetap05: These sites are for people who have a passion for cars and so why don't they just appreciate the cars and not try to pick fault in anything that's better than theirs????
Rant over...have a nice day all. lol:smilielol5:
But why would you by a Murcielago when you can have an M5? Or a 335d chipped?
And also why would you want a set of hair curlers over a Murcielago? :coolgleamA:

I believe bad journalism is the root case of a lot of this. Sad part is many of the writers should know better. Here is one quote that I found particularily stupid:
from the December issue of Octane Magazine, the Editor, Robert Coucher, makes the following statement ...."The 288 GTO is a proper racing car unlike the poodle-faking F40."http://www.ferrarilife.com/forums/images/smilies/argh.GIFhttp://www.ferrarilife.com/forums/images/smilies/argh.GIFhttp://www.ferrarilife.com/forums/images/smilies/argh.GIF
Yet another journalist making broad comments on a car in which he clearly has little to no experience. I used to have more respect for Mr Coucher opinion, that has now dropped to zero.

Well not sure who either of you are on PH, but my name is the same. :D
WTF is going on with Pistonheads at the moment?
Popularity, google and not being able to control who finds PH.
I joined PH in exactly the same way I joined PN- word of mouth, and likewise I mentioned both sites to like minded petrol heads. PH now is so big some real thought is going on to attract the right person and dissuade the idiots.

which is probably why they appointed us as thier tour and event organisers :D
just kidding, the guys that run it are real petrolheads and they do their best to make the site work well.
considering the amount of traffic they get i think they do a pretty good job.
most of the sparring is confined to the well policed P&P
Ah well, just stick with the regulars and all will be fine.
Still a daily timewaister for me ;)
