View Full Version : Replica Cars
We have all seen them, replica supercars, often derived from the likes of MR2's and Saxos etc...
But what is the concensus? I personally don't see the point at all. I stumbled across this tonight, from the piccies it looks "ok" but something about it is not right. Also, I can't fathom what it "was". The ad says Make = Ferrari, but it can't be? The interior looks very cramped, and the pic of the rear side panel looks odd.

That's an MR2 base mate :)
It's on Autotrader too - more pictures etc...

I think 360 replicas have also been based on Pontiac Fieros and Peugeot 406s.
The joke is if they just spent the £25k, they could get a 348, Exige or a nice Porker. Bizarre!

it depends what type of replica, a good freind of mine has a replica Lola T70
the chassis was made on the jig Lola used, the engine, gearbox, brakes are all exactly the same as Lola used and other than switches and speedo nothing comes from another run of the mill car, I can see the point to this kind of car its not a luxury car you need to be a serious petrol head to know what it is its not about pretending its something its not. what i cant get my head around is you get all the kudos of owning a Farrari but sooner or later you have to hold your hand up and admit its really an MR2
personally i would rather go for a kit with a generic look its probably fun to drive so just enjoy it for what it is.
couple of pics of his "lola"

But that Lola, the Cobras and GT40's are closer to recreations of the original, where's the MR2's are pretending to be something they are not.
I'd love a GT40 myself.
it's a tough call.
my stance is that if you recreate a car that is common then you're just asking for trouble.
i see no point in fezza 355 or 360 replicas (except mine of course)
but, if its either very rare or very valuable, then you'll be able to drive it and enjoy it.
although with the caveat that it will never drive properly

I confess to thinking that many of these stick on panel replicas are a bit sad but that can be offset by the motives of the owner/builder. If they are attempting to fob it off as the real thing, burn them at the stake. If they are open about it or have other motives then good for them.
This, by the way, from a person who bought a finished Banham X99 out of sheer pigheadedness after being told it would never handle :blush5: They were nearly right. Managed a healthy 30% power hike but Hydragas suspension............

I have to agree here. Y'know, the age old 'not my cuppa, but good work' thing.

Oh-em gee. What on earth is that?

What's X99? Well, don't say you didn't ask.
They look like this.....

Someone said to me "You'll never get that piece of sh*t to perform so I took it as a challenge :( The guy I bought it from had it built with grand plans of making it an electric car. Needless to say that fell flat and I stole it from him for peanuts. Well, let's face it nobody would spend proper money on it.
I did get the mahoosive 1.4 'K' series engine from 95 to 130 bhp without the head gasket going and started to try and sort the suspension but realistically it would have needed turrets welding in and proper suspension. One day I thought "I've had enough" and bought a TVR instead.
It was fun though and fairly chuckable after a fashion but I just got tired of people saying "Couldn't afford a TT then?".
eeerm thats an odd looking thing for sure. What exactly is it based on...(i'm thinking rover metro judging by the comments on the hydragas and k series engine?)
cant decide whether i like it or not...
it has a certain charm about it, but perhaps too close to a TT.
whilst i applaud the spirit (and pig headedness...which i can understand as i display a lot of that myself) i think buying the TVR was the sensible option (and i bet not many people say that!)
so what did you do with it?

Yep, Metro based.
Oddly enough mine ended up in the States. Long story cut short I put the car up for sale on PH, received a call from a Dutch guy claiming to be from a museum, strung him along because I thought he was a scammer, received a visit from a guy, who turned out to be the designer of the Lomax three-wheeler, was handed the asking price in cash and watched my car get hoisted onto a flatbed and driven off.
It was on the museum's list of stock for a while but disappeared after a few months. Too weird even for them maybe and looking at their other exhibits that's saying something.

On another thread there are reasons why people became addicted to cars... I guess teh question is, does it really matter?
I believe that all car affinity is good. From the sublime to the ridiculous. If a bad accident in Halfrauds floats your boat, then good on you. If only a perfectly original SS100 does it for you, then why not? But to criticise others for not agreeing with any personally held, subjective belief about automotive aesthetics is just about as daft as saying there is only one look possible to make a woman attractive. If there was, we chaps would be forming a VERY long queue.
As the French so eloquently put it, "Chacun a son gout".

Ferrari replicas... :smilielol5:
But saying that...I wouldn't mind a replica Daytona Spider.
