View Full Version : Fish & Chips Run - Sept 9th

spiritof'76

Shall we Run in September ?

I think we should :thumb:....... and if we don't decide on something soon we'll be in danger of letting a whole year pass without an informal Run in the UK :( and we can't have that now can we......... what with being a motoring club and all that ;)

So,nothing set in stone yet regarding dates and destinations but just testing the water for interest :D

Though Bobsan and myself did have a chat once about a Run up to Aldeburgh on the Norfolk coast as they have a world famous Fish & Chips shop up there and chips is always a good excuse for a drive :drool5:

......... a show of hands then, who fancies it ? Be like the old days :D

.

You'd better not lead the run, Julian. Aldeburgh's in SUFFOLK ! Last Easter I ate the best chips I've ever had up there.

Yes, Im up for something :)

Seem to keep missing Ace meets, Ive not driven the car Since the Le mans Classic, Im waiting on a couple of parts and I feel like climbing up the bloody wall at the moment :(

Ive been invited to Beaulieu for a Supercar event August Bank Holiday and have some things lined up in September, but am open to suggestions :)

Fatboy 18

Nope, I can't make that date either :(

spiritof'76
03-08-12, 08:48 AM
Well, i suppose there is no reason why we can't go whilst PN are away touring............ why should they have all the fun ;) I was just trying to be polite :)

A S#### M#### start is possibly on the cards so that'll hopefully suit you :D

jumplead
03-08-12, 21:42 PM
Thats fecking miles away... A Watford Gap start would be better ;)

Unless that means you are doing the HBB run again, then that would suit me as the end pub is literally 2 miles down the road

Fatboy 18

As long as there's no video cameras we should be fine :banghead:

Surely M### isn't much further for you than it is me ?

We're definately going to the coast for this one.......... as it is summer after all, well, sort of anyway :p

We do still need to try HBB again at some point though :)

Just thought of something! This is the same day as Little Havens Supercar day!

Do we know if PN are attending this year and what the plan is? There advertising Vipers, Ford GT's Ferraris, Lambos etc etc

But apart from receiving the flyer Ive not heard much on here?

Ive just added it to the calender to find out if there's any reaction from others? Sorry to stick a fly in the soup :(

I also forgot about that one :( but kind of feel that if we were needed we would have been asked by now maybe ?

I have seen the thread on CS and they are asking for i think 30 or 35 cars and they had 28 last time i looked......... it's obviously a much scaled down event this year due to the circumstances though from what i can make out it will take a big step forward in 2013 which is good :D

If you get the call Mark then i fully understand if you opt for that :thumb:

You really cannot beat Adleburgh chips they are epic. That combined with a run down the East Anglia coast certainly sounds like a great run.

Julian,
After a fantastic run last Sunday, quite fancy bringing the seight - are there any fuel stops planned along the route. i can probably manage just under 100 miles from a full tank - but if we are talking serious hoonage that could drop to about 80!! No problem if not i will just come in the barge instead.
See you sunday

Julian, do you intend to go from the 1st pick up point directly via the motorway and the main A road to the 2nd pick up point? If so, for my guys coming up via the tunnel, we could meet up before the 2nd stop :) Have to say its a bloody early start, my old farts like their beauty sleep :D

What sort of time do you think we will arrive at the final destination? The reason I ask is I might have another couple of cars joining us from the north, midway through the run ;)
Feel free to ring me or drop me a pm if you dont want to post up on here :)

Mark, probably best that we just meet you at Start 2 as we are not on the route where your M road joins the A road ;)

As regards start times i'm thinking i may put everything back half an hour for the benefit of those coming from further away...... i'll pm everyone confirmation of this later. Another reason for this is that i drove quite a bit of the route yesterday to check it out and i found that once out a bit East the roads were very quiet even at 2pm so it's not really a case of beating the traffic :)
The slightly later start does mean we may trip over Bradley Wiggins on the Tour of Britain at the end of our route but he's a bit of a Hooner himself so hopefully we won't slow him down too much :p Feel free to grow your sideburns if you're a fan :D

I've done not all but most of the route and it has to be said it's great........... 1st stage out of start b will suit the more nimble cars and then when we get out East it opens out a bit for the bigger cars to stretch their legs a bit more................and have you seen the forecast :thumb::thumb::thumb:

I'll give you a call later regarding those that want to meet en-route :)

Guys
Great day, thanks to Julian and Bob for organising it. Was a bit surreal driving into Southwold with what seemed like our own reception lining the streets :bowtie:

We got a bit stretched out at times with two or three groups but it was fun catching up, even managed to grab some air off an unexpected bridge which was interesting. Definitely up for another run next time there's one organised.

Brilliant run today, our first one with this forum.

Was great fun keeping with the Escort Cossie and the other GT3 at the front of the pack - a great pace you set there Julian. Was a little unnerving down some of the single track roads though - think I have too much of an imagination!

Only downside to the day was clipping the inside kerb :banghead: - threw the rear off line so thank goodness there was nothing coming the other way. Great driving from the Cooper SD behind us also.

Dave - we were wondering on the way home how you managed to keep your hat on!

I'm delighted that you all had such a great time. On the other hand, I'm grateful that I pulled out as the clutch on my Maserati decided to slowly collapse while I was driving on the North Circular this evening..

I managed to stagger to my sister's house where the car's safe and sound. I'd hate to have been stuck out in the wilds of Suffolk waiting for the AA to turn up. That's for sure.

Glad you guys had a good run, I managed to get out of working the Sunday late Saturday, by which time my better half had been asked to help some friends with their horses at the Arab racing at Salisbury, so I ended up going there to assist too.

looks like I missed a good run, but small consolation for us was our friends won the big race and bought home a nice silver trophy and big wedge of prize money.

Not going to be able to make the Ace tonight so i'll catch up soon.

1. Spiritof'76 - Cosworth
2. GeeTee3 - Cayman R
3. Fatboy 18 - Viper GTS
4. Steve - Tuscan S
5. Miglia888 - Mini
6. 911p - GT3

8. Bobsan - GT3
9. Magpie - TVR Tuscan
10. Firesafetydave - Seight
11. RSnissan - M3
12. Steve - Integrale Evo
13. Worldwidewomble - bmw 130

There may have been a couple of additional TVR's i'm not familiar with.

With hindsight i shouldn't have moved the times back as these things rarely go off on time anyway so by time we left Boreham it was 8:30 and inevitably, with it being a long Run, we were compromised later on but nevermind........... i was probably a bit daft to think we would have Southwold to ourselves given that the good weather was forecast and there was a big event close by anyway  Thought it would be like when myself and the wife have been in the past out of season and we've had the place virtually to ourselves :)

Good fun all the same :D

I think we definately need to get back to our old ways of doing these things a bit more often as we've let it go a bit in recent times :o Think it would be good to try for doing at least one good one per season :) Strictly speaking i think yesterday was actually autumn but it felt like summer so maybe we'll aim for an autumn one maybe early November if the weather will co-operate :)

Here are a few point and clik snaps......... had hoped to pic all the cars together at the end but the car park was too rammed :(

I love Southwold, in fact the whole area. That's where we plan to retire to in a few years. Slightly inland, on the West side of the A12, around Framlingham. It's a glorious area to live in & there's some really quiet roads in the hinterland, even during the summer holidays.

Just got activated too!

Many thanks indeed for organising the run Julian - some great roads, and some really lovely villages on the route.

Loved being behind to hear the full thunder of the Viper, particularly while passing us all on the A12 - took me back to watching the Oreca Viper GTS-R's clean up at Le Mans in GT2/GTS back in 98/99/00. Thank you Fatboy 18.

Richard was fun to follow through the roundabouts in the 130i - some nice driving there making me work on the exits. Good to meet you, and looking forward to hearing what you and your brother make of Le Mans next year!

A bit further forward in the line, and sitting behind the three TVR's sounded superb with all the engines making a wonderful beat frequency like a flight of Spitfires in formation as you zoomed along, plus all the various pops and bangs from the exhausts. Thank you all.

Further forward in the line again, and sitting behind both GT3's was a real pleasure too - some smooth driving going on from Paul/Ben there, which was much appreciated and a joy to watch. Hope the wheel is refurbable.

And while I was up there, there was some nice driving going on right behind me from Nev in the lead black TVR - hope you enjoyed watching my rear suspension work overtime as much as I enjoyed hearing your Tuscan working hard behind.

Thanks also for the kind comments to those who had me behind you - It was as much as my skinny 195 tyres and bog standard 141bhp MINI diesel could do, keeping up with you, and I thoroughly enjoyed a truly great drive with some awesome sights & sounds from where I was sitting.

Glad I could help the lead group get back together when things split up a bit, before having to head back home.

Good to meet up and chat with Stephen again, run with Dave again, and meet Steve with his very nice Integrale Evo.

Hope everyone else had as good a time as I did.

Really looking forward to the next time - count me in.

Cheers everyone. Bob.

P.S - averaged well over 28mpg in the MINI during the run despite the brisk pace, and managed over 60mpg all the way back home for lunch... :D

Another addition to "team just got thier accounts activated", a massive thankyou to Julian for organising the whole run and setting the pace, the roads were awesome and what a day for it, shame that I didnt get the MX-5 our for it but being a passenger in my brothers 130 and in the Westfield was awesome enough by itself.

Big thankyou to Dave for letting me run in the Westfield for the second half of the run, just incredible car, and its that kind of thing in letting me passenger up with him is what makes this community so great!

The noise from the Viper, the TVRs and the Westfield were superb, particular highlight was the overtake from the Viper on the dual carrage way, was just about able to get it on video too.

I have lots of photos and will grab some stills off the videos and post them over the next couple of days, if anyone wants any of the videos just send me a private message and I will work out a way of send them over.

Cheers Bob, you certainly know how to hustle that Mini around :thumb: It was enjoyable seeing it tuck in then disappear off round the bends, you must have been working overtime in there.

Thanks also for getting us back up to the lead group, you didn't put any pressure on yourself when you said "I'm not sure I can get us back in touch but I'll try" and then about 5 miles later we were back with the convoy, great driving.

Look forward to the next one

Great to keep reading the feedback and again welcome to all our new members here :D

One thing is very clear............ we need to do this again :thumb:

We'll probably do Suffolk in a similar fashion again next year but for this year i'm sure we can squeeze another in somewhere :) Nothing firm yet but i'm having thoughts towards mid to late october with a view to maybe Kent or Surrey or maybe even head towards the Cotswolds ;) Try and move these things around a bit but unfortunately wherever you go it's not always ideal for everybody hence trying to rotate Runs into different areas :)............ so many roads to drive and not enough Sundays :o

Keep an eye on the Forum and we'll see what the future brings :D

Best get busy with the spanners then Nigel as i have a new Run under construction :D......................... just needs a little more work and planning before i post it up :)looking for the source of another rattle today . . . and then there's the possible gear or clutch problem (again, bl**dy improving kits) - sorting the ARB welding has dropped in priority and as for the well overdue respray that seems to be receding again

but we'll see perhaps things might not be serious and will go well - there's always a first time for everything :)

Sadly my viper is now off the road.

I broke it at Santa pod. I was recovered home by the very nice man from the AA

So rolled up to the start line, the lights went green ..........

I moved 10 feet forward and tore the half shaft and UJ apart :(

It also damaged the diff yoke so will have to get the diff rebuilt, replace all UJ's and get some new half shafts! So were looking at a couple of grand! With me doing most of the work :(

Ouch !! :o

Still, better it's the drive train than the engine.................. and atleast it's gone at the end of the summer rather than the beginning :o

Trying to find some positives here lol

For the next Run you'll have to hire a 1ltr Corsa and see if you can break that too :D

Yep, it's been a great season, I've got to do a lot of saving now and find some more work That's racing, better to have broken at slow speed rather than in the outside lane of a motorway!

That's some serious breakage... :( not good news..

That's the reason I won't run mine down the strip... Way more likely to break stuff..

2K sounds like crazy money for a diff rebuild, half shafts and and UJ's...

It's just over $1026.00 for the half shafts, then UJ's are around $38.00 each x 6 + shipping + duty , then I've got to get the diff rebuilt! So it won't be far off.

I broke a driveshaft earlier in the year in the seight, found a company up north who make them from blanks, fantastic service, I tho k it was about £180 for one. If you are interested I can try to find the number.

DaveDave,
did you keep the drawing for that or the company as DaveM's brother bought back the V8 Westie he sold to Wayne and wanted to do something with the drive shafts
