View Full Version : Dunton Charity trackday 18th Sept 2011
Taken from Club Scuderia;
Littlehavens Trackday
This is not a Ferrari exclusive event; it is for Lambo, Ferrari, Ford GT.McClaren
The event starts at 9.30am on Sunday 18th September and is based on giving rides around the track to members of the public and ends at 4.30pm.
If you arrive anytime after 9.00am, you will be given the opportunity of practicing on this banked track that is very different to a normal flat track.
When you arrive (directions to be posted at a later date) be careful as there are a number of speed bumps after you enter the Fords Dunton Area – I strongly suggest a slow approach.
Please check your insurance – most of you will be aware of track day restrictions. You will be asked to sign a waiver for the organisers and you will be given and fitted with a wrist band, without which you will not gain access to the test track. Passengers will also be required to sign a waiver and be fitted with a wrist band this will protect you from third party claims. Crash helmets will not be necessary and are not required.
Eight cars at a time will be on the track and drive 2 laps approximately 4 minutes total. No overtaking will be permitted and a maximum speed of 90 mph has been suggested http://www.fcars.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/laugh.gif
The track will be managed by marshals with flags. The reality is that with 8 cars on track, this will act as a brake and extreme speeds won’t be possible. Fords will stop any excesses but as we will have passengers, we will not want to terrify them.
When returning to the unloading area, the marshals will be waiting to help passengers out. You can then return to the new passenger area or go to the adjacent area for a break.
Each ride will be charged to passengers at £20.00 and we expect to do 800 rides during the day. We are restricted as only 8 cars can go on track at a time.
Would you be kind enough to cut and paste your CS name and car type to confirm that you will attend or delete if you find you are unable to commit. It promises to be a great day as there are many other attractions and many more than last year.
Due to the nature of this event we are likely to have many drivers wishing to take part and so we have to ask you to confirm your car registration, this will be checked on arrival and if people are not pre registered they will not be permitted to go on track. In the event of oversubscription priority will be given to those that have helped the cause in the past by driving, fundraising etc and especially to my friends!
We need a few cars (supercars if possible - Club Scud have final decision as to whether cars are accepted or not as the event is smaller than Dads Day Out so the focus will be on halo cars that will encourage people to pay for rides)
and of course some help with getting people to the event itself!!

· Full tyre check given by Jet Wheel Tyre on the day. Check list to be confirmed and agreed.
· Valid MOT certificate (if car is over 3yrs old) to be brought on the day No MOT no drive !!!!!
· Make sure all drivers are aware that they will not be insured on the track and can source their own insurance for the day
· STRICT 70mph speed limit coming into and on the banks – enforced with a speed gun
· 1 strike warning system – 1 warning given, the second time the driver will be asked to leave
· All drivers will need to be onsite before 9am to be given full brief and have all checks done. They will also get a practice lap as usual
· Brief will be carried out in a separate room inside the Ford building away from distractions
These are basically the details in a nutshell that were gone through today. We will be having another meeting next week and speak about having more than one organized brief that we can let drivers know about so that there is more flexibility as to when they turn up and also Ford will be happy with. I do not see this being a problem.
There will also be a separate hospitality unit to look after the drivers all day with food and refreshments so the drivers will not need to go far and cue up, and it will of course all be free!
Ford are still happy to host the event and want to carry on supporting us they are just covering themselves more than anything I think.
Please understand that Ford is a large multinational and have to act responsibly. The briefings MOT and tire check are not optional

I drove last year and am willing to do so again this year if that is OK? Found last year it was useful having a four seater as on a few occasions I was able to take out the whole family together.
Anyway count me in if you need me and stick me on the list.

If there is to be a seperate PN list as per other years......... i'll stick myself on it :)
I can offer the Sagaris or maybe the F430 (but as it's Carolines I'd prefer the Sagaris). Would that be OK for them?

Helped out at this last year in the loading/unloading area, was an excellent day out. It appears that I have already arranged to be elsewhere on this date :( although I may see if I can get someone else to take my place so I can make it again.
We got some very positive comments last year about how we had run the queue (people and cars), loading and unloading. Were told we would be welcome back to help again.

Happy to go on the list if they'll have me.....
appreciate the ol' Chevy's not a super car, but does seem popular at these kind of things
(I was probably one of the busiest cars at Castle Combe Magic Day couple of weeks ago, only cars out more were a trike and a 60's Impala.. !)

But who do I go to to sort out insurance for this? I am only with Admiral so I don't think it covers something like this.
Let me know.
Thanks

No Insurance, To be honest I don't think track day insurance will cover it as it's not really a track day. Hope for the best, thats what I do:eek:
I am going to have to pull out unfortunately as I have realised that the Highland tour clashes with this by just a few hours.

Harsh, I'd like to come along in my Exige R please. But, can you please ask the organisers to state the minimum car ride height to get into the place? My car is extremely low and grounds on speed bumps on normal roads.
The car:

http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x156/Blade_uk/RPS_5557s.jpg
PS, might be best to put me down as No.20 until you find out about the ride height, as otherwise I know there will be no space left for me :) Thanks :)
I could alternatively bring the F348 Spider, but I reckon there will be a few of those along already from CS.
I have a black Cobra replica. Not quite a supercar, but it does attract a lot of attention & sounds great. I'm happy to support Havens Hospices, please add my name to the list.
Jas, you'll be fine, we get marshalled around the bumps.

The next day after I bought the Exige R, I managed to get it stuck in Gillingham with a "mountainous" :o speed bump in front, and tried to turn in a wide private driveway, only to ground the car and get it stuck :(

Haha, i had a similar incident in a Dino kit car I used to have. I turned into a street to be greeted by a sea of speed bumps as far as the eye could see! Fortunately the bus driver behind me was on the ball and blocked the main road off while I reversed back out. See some of them are nice :D

Sounds fine to me :) We will just have to know the exact point at which we need to Brake to 70 MPH :D
70mph? Really? Can't there be a slightly better speed? 100? Please?
Actually, re-reading that, we're talking about the banks - hence gun it on the straights, be back to 70 for the banks. Bravo Ford!

I would have thought heavy braking into the corners was no safer than the speed being scrubbed off in a more natural way as you enter the corner , this will then limit straight speed to a certain extent. Not a problem for me though.:)
Just out of interest I presume it will still go ahead if raining?

Was just looking back at last years list.................... at the moment we have a 50 car list as opposed to last years 70 cars :o
What with drop outs and early leavers i seem to remember cars got a bit thin on the ground last year towards the end of the day :o
You all reckon we'll cope ?

Nadine and I were the last two cars out there at the end of the day. I did the last 1 1/2 Laps when they closed the track :)

How many cars on track at any time, and how long does it take to get round?
Doesn't sound anywhere near as hard on the cars as a track day? So not so many cars will need time to cool down?
Talking of sound, I guess there isn't any noise limits for the cars?
thanks

thanksBeing honest it all depends on how you push your own car, My car normally has brake cooling problems, I do have to take time out to let the brakes cool down. Also the cars can become very compressed on the banking, I have scraped the underside of my car on the track several times, (but with more down force than the star ship Enterprise, that's to be expected) :D
They let around 8 cars on the track at a time, you do two laps, at the end of the second lap you go back into the pit area and drop off your paying passenger, then line up for the next passenger and so on. There is no 'cool down' lap so the car will be hot sitting in the pits! Don't believe its not as hard on the car as a track day ;)
Sure if you want to take it easy, you can but your passengers always hope for a bit more :) Safety is paramount, and there is strictly no overtaking so this is good :) If there is a car going much slower, hang back a bit then put your foot down to catch up :) (Passengers like this)
Haha, i had a similar incident in a Dino kit car I used to have. I turned into a street to be greeted by a sea of speed bumps as far as the eye could see! Fortunately the bus driver behind me was on the ball and blocked the main road off while I reversed back out. See some of them are nice :D
LOL... that was lucky. Perhaps the bus driver was a petrolhead :thumb:
I'm wondering whether it might scrape on the bottom on the banked area too, with downforce added to the compression on suspension.

Didn't add myself to the list, as I assumed Fezzas, Lambos got the priority, was hoping to come down but happy to drive and take people out in the Chevy, and be there later in the day while other more fragile and obviously inferior cars break down... (like the TVR's at Bruntingthorpe :D.. )

LOL - yeah head gasket, clutch and exhaust gasket failures from something like 300+ laps
... oh that didn't make it sound better :-(
okay, 3 failures from 600 miles ... sounds even worse
1 failure for every 100 passengers that at the end of the lap shouted ... awesome!!!

Hi if it's not too late put me down on the reserve list
1965 Shelby GT350R FIA/HTTP race car,it maybe old but it aint slow.:)
yrd494c Chris
That would be an interesting car for me, I'd have a go in it.
Last year there was a classic Bullit replica which was quite popular, there was one young lady who queued for almost 2 hours just to have a go in it. I went in it and it was great fun.:thumb:

Will there be blue ribbon rides like at dunsfold for cars like the McLaren and viper here?
At this stage i believe all the cars will be in the same pool and cost the same.
bearing in mind the smaller nature of the event and no overtaking allowed on the track it would be the best plan

The guys at Dunton have asked me to keep the Focus RS's in reserve as whilst they are epic cars , they wont have the same appeal as the more exotic looking stuff.
However i am working on an agreement whereby nick and loophole can come along and be on hand in case someone needs a four seater or requests the car specifically...leave that with me at the moment.

Anymore news regarding the time of the briefings? My 9 year old son has a game for the Hammers against Spurs on Sunday morning, and it would be great if i could miss the morning brief to save me coming over before his match, as he needs to be at Chadwell Heath training ground at 10 a.m.
I'll do the afternoon session until the end from about 1.30pm(ish) hopefully.
They're all off on the Alpine tour currently - check in a few days?
Sounds good to me harsh :) just dependant on new tyres after mine where slit outside my house a couple of weeks ago :(.

Sounds good to me harsh :) just dependant on new tyres after mine where slit outside my house a couple of weeks ago :(.Sorry to hear that Nick :( Still at least your paintwork is OK :) Years ago I used to have a Chevy Camaro like Stew's I had just had it re-sprayed and then some scroat keyed it all along one side :(
Now unable to attend so Petrolhead Nirvana list (provisional) slot 6 becomes vacant.

Have to be with my son in Chadwell Heath by 9.30 a.m so there's no chance of me making the morning briefing. I should be at Dunton by 1p.m.ish, will there be an afternoon briefing?

or if you fancy a little detour, about 7 miles further east on the a127 is a cracking american diner, does alot of ar and bike events, not sure when it opens on a sunday though?
i'm in the uk at mo, my next tour doesn't go out till october, so i'm going to dunton on sunday, can't wait to see some stunning machinery.
Is a drivers pre-briefing email coming out this year?
If not, is it arrive at 8:30am like last year, or is it different this year? :)

I'm number 13 on the PN list - shall i bring the old Porsche 911 3.2 (that i brought last year) or the Boxster S (with new loud pipe). What do you think would be best??
Mat
Bav, I'm coming up the A3 through Guildford, and meeting Mark at the Clackett Lane services (petrol area), at 6.30 - so probably aiming for Guildford around 6.
Phil - do you fancy that as well?

Mat, i think the 3.2 would be the unusual option, something that will stand out from all the modern cars if that's cool?
see you in the morning!

I join there to get down to Dunton and wanted to know if there's anyone going that way to drive with? :) Hi Phil, we will be passing Jcton 4 at around 6:45 ish heading towards the dartford Tunnel, If you like we could take the M25 exit and come down to Hewitts roundabout, then double back on ourselves to the M25. The best place for you to meet us would be in the beginning of the Hard shoulder to the M25 (20yds after the roundabout) :)
I will send you a PM with my mobile Phone No :) .....Er, OK I wont then seeing as you do not receive PMs!
I will keep an eye on this thread to see if you respond, if you don't then we will just continue on to the Tunnel ;)

Guys - i've just been to "Porkys" (which used to be a little chef) and sharing the same site is a Shell garage (which i filled up with) I'm sure its open before 0800 though, might be busy with bikers tho. I think i will go down there myself about 0730, if it is 0800 then theres a Maccie Ds on the other side of the road back at BasVegas. This is the nearest Shell BTW.

OK Nearest petrol stations to the actual Dunton Test track are TOTAL (less than a minute away) and TESCO (less than 2 minutes away).

Hovefield Service Station,
Arterial Road' (A127)
Wickford, SS12 9HZ, GB
Crockett, the reason some of us are going to the Little Chef East bound before the Dunton turn off is because we are meeting some other members from Club Scud, please feel free to get your breakfast where ever you wish!
Bav, I'm coming up the A3 through Guildford, and meeting Mark at the Clackett Lane services (petrol area), at 6.30 - so probably aiming for Guildford around 6.
Phil - do you fancy that as well?
What time do we need to be there ?? I get on at the Ripley junc.
We need to be Dunton for 9, but a group of us are meeting for breakfast before that... You're welcome to join us, if not, we'll see you there!
PS The weather looks good for tomorrow as well! Result!

Quick weather update - I live about 2 miles from Dunton and the heavens just opened up for about an hour. As my car has no roof i may have to defer my arrival til later in the day if its throwing it down first thing - can't imagine anyone would want a ride around Dunton in mine when its raining. :(
ps - i will post up a localised weather report as soon as i'm up in the morning if thats any help ?
If anyone else is travelling from Kent, I'll be leaving at 08:00 from Kings Hill, with ETA 08:30 at Dartford Tunnel.

Hi Phil, we will be passing Jcton 4 at around 6:45 ish heading towards the dartford Tunnel, If you like we could take the M25 exit and come down to Hewitts roundabout, then double back on ourselves to the M25.
That would be brilliant if you could come off the motorway at that time. I'll make sure I'm there though will be in a little Micra! So I'll probs be the one spotting you rather than the other way round. I'll drop you my number as a PM and perhaps you could txt me in the morning when you get there, or vice versa.
In case we don't meet at J4, you'll probably spot me on the '25, reg number T647UMV.
Hope to see you tomorrow

The other side of the Dartford tunnel is a 50mph restriction due to road decorating :o I would allow another 1/2 Hr to be on the safe side ;)
Thanks for the heads up :thumb:
Do note though that there will be hourly driver briefings, so if you miss the 09:00 one, it's not a complete disaster :)
final info bulletin from me.
you have to have...
MOT
Driving Licence
you must be over 30 to drive on the day
FYI - the nearest Super Unleaded to Dunton is the Tesco store less than a mile from the circuit:
TESCO EXTRA

this is very true, and its a massive pain in the bum:(
for any of you guys coming from the kent side, you could try this...
...out of the tunnel, and exit at j30, its the 2nd exit, (the 1st comes up immediately and is easy to miss if you are in the right hand tunnel.) once exited at j30, go upto the roundabout and take the 3rd exit onto the a13 eastbound, basildon/southend, carry on down the a13, and take the 4th exit that you come across, this is for the a128. go up the slip road, and take the 1st exit, for the a128 for brentwood, this is a nice single carriageway road, that allows for, "flowing driving;) imho"follow the a128 all the way to the next roundabout, say 8-10 miles, at this roundabout, the junction with the a127, take the 3rd exit, onto the a127 east, for basildon and southend, after a short blast down here, take the very 1st exit, go up the sliproad to the roundabout, take the 3rd exit, you are now at fords dunton.:thumb:
as others have posted, with regards to caffs, and fuel stops, all info spot on:thumb:
i'm just going tomorrow as a paying punter, so hope to spot some of your cars there:D

Sadly I didn't spot the note about drivers need to be over 30 until I arrived for the briefing, so the old 911 wasn't able to get out on track. That's the problem of only being 28!
Never mind, it was still nice to catch up with lots of other PN members and see an amazing collection of cars. Highlights have got to include the mclaren mp4-12c, the classic shelby mustang and the bronze old-school Porsche 911 Turbo (I was only jealous a little!)
Hope you guys raised lots of money. Looking forward to the next event, when hopefully I will be able to drive next time.
Had a good day. Does anyone know how much was raised ?

Lost count of rides, Mark, I'm sure you'll be glad to know that the traffic cleared as soon as you went... Snetterton tomorrow (with grumbly brakes), and a great time. Bachi, we're due a proper chat soon, Bav, great to meet you, and hello to all the lovely, wonderful people today (and those who rode in the cars).
Photos later...
Thanks to all involved in organising this. Had a great time, and I hope lots was raised for charity, and the passengers had fun.
14 year old boy at the end of his ride with me said, "that was bleep-ing terrifying" :D But he said he enjoyed it :)
On the downside, my low ride height and ultra stiff suspension caused a nightmare on the bumpy concrete banked bits :thumbsdow My front tyres chewed up my wheel arch liners and I utterly destroyed one. I could smell burning :( Had to call it a day around 14:30 as a result :(
Ford and Pirelli seemed to have no equipment at all to jack up my car so I could remove the wheel :hmmm: The petrolhead brotherhood was more helpful of course, and Bacchi pointed me towards a helpful TVR owner with gaffer tape that I patched up my car with.
Thanks to all those who lent a helping hand. I really appreciated it :) :)
Drove home at 50-60 all the way, and arrived with my front headlamp hanging by the wire :(

Remembered MOT and driving license (license wasn't checked)................. but forgot the sodding camera :banghead:
There were official photographers on the banking and other places but where those pics will surface i've no idea ?
Highlight of the day was not being left for dead by an Enzo :D
lo-light of the day was some grumpy kid passenger that just grunted at me while i tried to make light hearted conversation.................. got the impression his parents had bought him a ride he wasn't really bothered about as he spent most of the time fiddling with his phone ................... still, we got his cash :thumb:
Was a fabulous day, would have been nice to have been there for more of it.
That kid doesn't know what an amazing car your cossie is. Thank you for the ride it was epic :D
Thank you Bachi for the ride in the atom. Love that car, it's just so mental it's awesome :thumb:

Fantastic day,met some great people and cars. Not very good with names but thanks for the day.I had one young lady no older than ten that knew more about my car than i did !
My last ride was with a young guy that had a free pass and was on a mission to try out every car .It was only later that i realised he attended the hospice and it brought a lump to my throat as to how lucky we are.It was an honour to paticipate and hopefully make a few dreams come true.
Thanks again

What a fantastic day out! Great to catch up with some fellow PNers and to meet some new ones. Had some great passengers who all had a great time. Taking the children out is without doubt the most fun. There was a 7 year old boy who new everything about James Bond and Aston Martins, just so happenend we were infront of one on track and for some reason he was convinced James Bond was driving it..........................can't thing why.;) The youngest was only 4............could hardly see anything but was well happy after I infromed him we had won the race.:)
Thanks to Don1 for taking my son for a blast and thanks to Fatboy for taking me out in his Viper...................one awesome car (& noise)!
