View Full Version : The 2011 Alpine Classic Tour - July 2nd to 9th
We've moved the dates on this tour to take advantage of a lull in the Europeen calender which means quiet roads and good rates, it also leaves space for a new Alpine tour to take place in September.
However the format of this trip is the same, lots of driving, decent (well priced but still good quality) hotels and more passes than you can shake a stick at
Of course we've refined the route so it will be even better than 2010 (if that was possible) and our pricing will follow the same ethic of great value for money
if you have done it before then you have to do it again, if you haven't then you had better act fast as we're going to try and keep the numbers down to 22 cars this time to make sure everyone gets the best from it.
so without further ado, we present;
The 2011 Alpine Tour
No yearly itinerary would be complete without our famous Alpine Tour.
Eight days of pure driving nirvana on roads that all petrolheads dream of.
Of course, everyone has heard of the Stelvio Pass: it’s a great road and an ascent that every driver should experience at least once in their lifetime. It’s by no means the best though; we know there are even better roads in the region and we have the knowledge to take you there. Those who have been on this trip in the past have labeled it the holiday of a lifetime and it’s a tour that we are justifiably proud of.
We haven’t rested on our laurels though, and you wouldn’t expect us to would you? For 2011 we have gone back to first principles and made the tour even better. We have reorganised the route and changed some of the hotels so you’ll spend more time on the twisty roads and Alpine passes you love, stay in hotels in beautiful surroundings and, believe it or not (if you take advantage of our early booking discount offer), this tour will cost less than last year.
Day 1
Calais To Offenburg - 404 Miles
We take advantage of the efficient French autoroutes to get us as close to the action as possible on the first day. It’s an opportunity to use the supplied walkie talkies to chat and banter with your fellow tourists and get to know the other cars traveling along with you.
There’s a Shell petrol station directly opposite the hotel so you can brim your car ready for the fun on Day 2.
Day 2
Offenburg to Davos - 270 Miles
After a good nights sleep and a hearty breakfast we head into the Black Forest sampling the roads Ducati use as their testing grounds. Then we head south into Switzerland towards Winterthur to bed down in Davos for the night surrounded by the passes we’ve come all this way to enjoy.
Day 3
Davos to Andermatt - 243 Miles
Day 2 will have left you with a smile on your face, Day 3 will be a grin you can’t get rid of.
We head out of Davos and head toward Austria, taking in the Fluellapass, then wander up the Stelvio pass, down the lesser known Umbrail pass, out to Bormio and away towards St Moritz ensuring we have time to run up the Julier pass before settling in at Andermatt.
Day 4
Andermatt to Courmayeur - 272 Miles
More passes than you can shake a stick at, not that you’ll have time for stick shaking as today will take us on the Nufenen pass, Furka pass, Grimsel pass, Susten pass and the Grand St Bernard pass. You may not know the names yet but they will live long in your memory. We end the day in Courmayeur at the base of Mont Blanc.
Day 5
Courmayeur to Col de Turini - 270 Miles
We promised fun roads on this trip and Day 5 proves that beyond all doubt. Heading away from Courmayeur we begin the day with the Petit St Bernard pass and continue on with the Col D L'iseran, Col du Galibier and the magnificent Col de la Bonette, which is the highest paved pass in the Alps and one of the major challenges in the Tour de France. Finally we head to a favourite stage of the Monte Carlo rally, the Col de Turini. Our hotel for the night sits on the summit of this challenging classic road.
Day 6
Col de Turini to Annecy - 250 Miles
We leave the Alps behind so that’s the end of the fun, right? Not a bit of it. Day 6 is all about the Route Napoleon. A mixture of long fast sweeping bends and tight twisty sections and views that will make you gasp. A truly amazing piece of tarmac. We end the day at Annecy known as the Venice of France, a beautiful town with stunning views across it’s lake to the mountains beyond.
Day 7
Annecy to Dijon - 237 Miles
A short dash to Geneva from Annecy, and then a quick trip up the mountain (watch out for bikes - this is a biker paradise) and over the top, dropping down to Auxonne and on to Dijon.
Day 8
Dijon to Calais - 345 Miles
The last day of the tour, but we have saved something special for you. A trip to the old Grand Prix circuit at Reims. For so long this historic circuit and it’s outbuildings was in ruins. Now however, they are being brought back to life. We have time to stop for a photo opportunity and a quick blast down the old straight to get a sense of what it was like all those years ago. Finally we head to Calais and a sad farewell to your fellow tourists and new found friends.

Hi to one and all,
I am a new member on here and have booked for the Alpine tour, cannot wait.
Looking forward to making new friends, and giving the Monaro a outing on proper roads. Nearer the tour date I will be asking for tips and info from you regular chaps so I dont make a fool of myself:D
Ade. :wavey:
Hi Ade,
welcome to Petrolhead Nirvana, I was the one you spoke to when you booked.
There are a fair few tour veterans on here and all of us are happy to help out.
Have a look around the rest of the site, if you post up in the general discussion area you'll find lots more info and a few tips already there (some of them tongue in cheek - buts that the general atmosphere here anyway!)
The countdown starts here!

Hi guys,
I'm new and am very happy to have found some fellow petrol heads.
I'm booking the classic Alpine tour and will be joining you from Paris, where I'm based.
I'll bring my 360 spider. :-)
Can't wait!
Cheers,
Alex
Hi Alex, Welcome to to PN as well, It's always great to connect with another Petrolhead.
looking forward to hearing our 360's together with different exhaust notes,
I'm hoping Adarsh will be able to come as well as he has a 360 and is in the process of putting a ti mate titanium system on his.
should be an interesting cacophony of noise!

I agree with that. I've always had a V6 Clio itch. I keep finding myself perusing those for sale on the PH site and trying to justify another car. I'm almost there! I think that they're wonderful machines. As you say, only the French !
I'm that old that I well remember the old Renault 5 Turbos. Now, they were really insane too.

They certainly give the Italians a run for their money when it comes to insanity/stupidity!
What's the hotel in Kent on the Friday night called? Was just gona meet everyone on Saturday morning as only live in Essex but kinda think it would be better to stay at the hotel to meet everyone the night before.

Before you buy one check out the info on the specific car you wanna buy at v6clio.net. It is a unique car. Go ahead do it then tell me in a years time what you think. Oh and do a run with the engine covers off it will be rather special!
I am now signed up for this trip
I did a similar one last year with Circuit Days - although wouldn't use them again!
This trip looks even better with lots more passes
Just need to decide which car to take
I think Clio V6 drivers will have fun trying to negotiate the passes given the turning circle I remember they had (I owned one a few years back - great car btw)

Lambo Gallardo or 996C4S. I took the Lambo last year but it didn't like the tight corners on the passes (lots of noise on full lock which is normal with these). Also pretty thirsty!
May take the C4S or get something else before then - I think cruise control would be useful on these trips

Last week I got stopped by the Swiss Customs Police, cos I didn't have a Vignette. They then went through the vehicle paprwork, and checked passports etc.. and made us follow them to the nearest services (about 10 miles of our route) to buy a Vignette for €40. So cost us 40 minutes, 1/2 gallon of fuel and some aggro.
Not worth the hassle of chancing it in my opinion.

thank's for that update Pete.
bit of a heads up Pete, on day 1 to Offenburg, as there are only two way points, TYRE take's a route via Bruxelles and Lexembough instead of Reims and Metz.
might need one more waypoint to induce it via Reims assuming that's the route as before ??
on the other hand, via Bruxelles would avoid a load of Peage fees.......

How bizarre - Tyre is now doing weird routing.
Worked perfectly last week, just checked it now and it's behaving as you said.
Just checked Google maps - that has changed the route too. Seems the new route is 10 miles longer but takes 10 minutes less...

Panic over!! Tracked my license down in Southend today. The court office had it there and a total liberty cos I wrote to them about it two weeks ago heard nothing. I went in gave my speeding ticket and she had my licence there and wrote out the endorsement. What a lazy bunch of people!! A two second job!! And then post it out but she said can take up to 12 weeks!! Anyways its all good :) Work I cant get out of on friday so will have to catch up with everyone sat morning at the hotel. Really looking forward to this considering I had given up hope of getting my licence back in time. Now need to get some euros and in car camera equiment.

I'll be at the hotel around 5pm on the Friday - well, that's the plan anyway :)
With current fuel prices there's not a lot in it, personally i'll be filling up on this side of the tunnel to save time in the morning, but our first regroup when we get off the train is at the petrol station on the exit ramp from the Eurotunnel terminal, so anyone who wants to can top off their tanks at that point.
I have just sent all tour participants an email with both my mobile number and Bachi's.
See you on Friday/Saturday!

I thought I'd see if we were going anywhere near the Italian Job opening sequence route, and a quick Google turned up this comprehensive (to say the least!) site: http://mitteleuropa.t35.com/filmlocations_the_italian_job.html
Turns out we are!
ETA: Except it looks like the link is now broken :(

The latest email is a forward of the original, so the pdf attachment has been stripped out - you'll need to look at Pete's first email.
See you Friday afternoon at Hythe - I'll be there around 6ish I guess.
not that we expect to do any night drives, but as a curtness I usually adjust headlamp beams, that way am covered, seem to remember we did a bit of night trekking one evening, poss running late that day though. besides, drinkstable like's to see the effort (bit of tape) on those foreign English roast beef cars.

Bob, I recall that we did drive in the dark one day on the Col de Torini in fact following a certain tour leader (Bachi) who got a bit lost!

OK, so nearly all packed, have clippers, scissors, combs, brush... just need to find some hair straighteners and me and the TT are ready to offer evening hair cutting services!
And if anyone gets over taken by me.... shame.... deep shame!

How bigger deal is it not to take a sat nav? My garmin doesnt seem to accept the file type
They've 'unzipped' into .rte files but need to be .csv files! ???

Rog,
whereabouts do you live?
I've got a TomTom you can borrow.
I'm in Twickenham, if you can't get here, maybe someone else who's going could pick it up from me for you??

Thanks :)
Do you reckon i could get away without one or is it crucial to have a satnav?
Not sure.
As long as you always have contact with one car then you should be ok.
However it is easy to get split up at say a busy roundabout or junction.
Just make sure you're in the middle of the pack & you should be ok.
Just don't blame me if you get lost!
Take a normal map & people's phone numbers & you should be able to sort it all out.
Failing that just buy a TomTom and junk that Garmin thingy!
Most of all have fun. :D

Ok - four late changes.
We have lost a 993, but gained an Audi TT (snigger), a Lamborghini Murcielago roadster, and a Ferrari 430.
And i've changed the rooming list about 5 times this week!!!
Should be a good tour :thumb:
