Former Labour Party leader Michael Foot has died, aged 96.
Mr Foot was elected Labour leader in 1980, succeeding Jim Callaghan, but stood down after losing the 1983 election to Margaret Thatcher.
Mr Foot, who was also a prolific writer, was first elected to Parliament in 1945 and was an MP for 47 years.
Prior to becoming Labour leader, Mr Foot served in the Callaghan and Harold Wilson governments as Minister for Employment and Commons leader.

Say what you like about him, Michael Foot , like Mrs Thatcher, was a conviction politician. He was passionate about what he believed in and kowtowing to focus groups would have appalled him.
He was the man who presided over the Labour election manifesto which was memorably described as "The longest suicide note in history".
But, at least he stood up for what he believed in.
Unlike the present bunch of self serving, lilly livered, pre packaged...........twonks.
R.I.P you scurrilous, donkey jacketted, passionate man. The likes of you will not be seen in politics again. More's the pity.

Sad news indeed :(
.....but it never really was a Donkey Jacket was it, more a Columbo-esque rain mac as i recall
Even back in the early eighties when i was first becoming politicised, he reminded me then of my Grandad :) Maybe that's why i had a bit of a soft spot for him !
Now, when is 'SHE' gonna pop her clogs........... i could do with cheering up :stirthepot:

A political legend, no matter what your views on him, he was hardworking, loyal and honest.
The likes of which we no longer see :(

Sad to hear this , a very committed politician and puts a lot of the new pr puff type to shame , also a member of the Plymouth Argyle - Green Army seen regularly in the stands , also sad to hear about Keith Alexander (ex Licoln City and was Macclesfield manager) today as well , the first black football team league manager , he overcame a lot of things in his life , he will be missed.
her legacy remains and your grandchildren will still be paying for it
And THEIR grandchildren's grandchildren will be paying for Gordon's!
