View Full Version : 2010 weekender 16th - 18th July
Have we got a treat for you!...you're going to wonder how we managed it but......
Come and join us for drinks in the bar at our spa hotel on Friday evening, July 16th, in Llandrindod Wells in the heart of Wales, then get a good night’s sleep in your ensuite bedroom.
Day One
On Saturday morning we enjoy a leisurely breakfast before breaking into two groups. Group A will enjoy the facilities at the hotel and spa including:
– 18m heated swimming pool
– Spa, sauna and steamroom.
– Gym, with individual TVs and sound systems.
– A selection of holistic treatments.(at additional cost)
Group B on the other hand will be assembling in the car park for a driver’s brief before heading north and into the Snowdonia National Park for adventures! We’ll visit Snowdon, Lake Bala, Betws-Y-Coed and the (in)famous “Evo Triangle” before returning back to the hotel to be re-united with Group A for dinner and drinks. (270 miles)
Day Two
On Sunday morning, after another hearty Welsh breakfast, we all head south to the Brecon Beacons National Park for some tortuous tarmac action which will, of course, include the famous Black Mountain Road and end at a pub for lunch. (130 miles)
What's included?
2 nights bed and breakfast
3 course dinner on the Saturday night
Sat-Nav files
Walkie talkies
Route info packs
2 tour managers in 2 cars
You know whats coming next, the price.....£197 per person and numbers are strictly limited.
We're launching it here right now and it'll be launched on Pistonheads in the next week.
At this price it'll be oversubscribed so get talking to the boys asap..

Aye Aye, this has caught my Eye
Had originally hoped to do an overseas tour in 2010 but then a loud bang from the transmission put paid to that as it currently threatens to rob my yearly motoring budget to the tune of £3k
So this, may offer a nice little compromise methinks :D will check dates and commitments etc and report back :sifone:

Is there a definitive list of attendees yet ? Just curios if there are any PH'ers onboard that i may have crossed paths with in the past :coolgleamA:

I'd like to extend an invite to anyone having a little extra time on the Sunday to call in for a coffee & a look at what we're doing (there's occassionaly some interesting stuff in the workshop!)
Postcode is CF44 9UP - we're about half a mile from the end of the A4059 (the 'Top Gear' road & our 'shakedown' route:))
The workshop's no palace, but I can promise a warm Welsh welcome.
Cheers all, Al.
Al, if time allows, (and i rather hope it will) then i would love to come down and say hello for sure.
seeing as my car has been to visit you and i have not! :D

We've been to Wales touring (roads and pubs) a few times years back and was there for a week last June - fantastic place, like Scotland but a lot nearer for us and more pubs of the type we like
Last year we toured in the Midget and with friends in a Supra and went on some excellent roads, a few maybe not suited to wide, powerful, very fast cars but roads with just about zero traffic
Almost all but one single-tracked mountain road were well tarmaced and smooth
Having a Midget I tried to mostly avoid the roads more suited to the wide, powerful, very fast cars but there are lots of roads for those type of cars too
Favourite roads from last year: too many to remember but they're all marked on my Road Atlas
Favourite pubs: ones that most others wouldn't like (but Harsh might) and a few we missed because they weren't open when we were in the area (they're not tourist type pubs you see)
We'll be back to Wales this year as soon as we can
Nigel, why dont you just come along with us mate?
we'll all be on this one as it's a holiday as well as a tour (and it means i dont have to take any days off!)
go on, about time we drove together!
Its not a holiday for me :(

I'm not sure you would want to drive with me as I don't drive like Daaaaave and the Midget would be left behind on all but certain roads when the Midget might get held up by wide red cars - it's happened with the Cappo on other tours :)
You're trying to spend Mrs Beer's hard earnt, I've seen others say it's expensive knowing you
Only out of interest as a feasibility study, have you space two cars and two couples? (with a permutation of elderly and scruffy as a description)

As long as the elderly refrains from wearing 'spinners' <shudder> then the scruffy is welcome... :)
The dinners are smart but not suited n booted. I'll let Harsh know when I speak to him later this morning.

Then it will be into shopping.
I am keen on Caterhams though, although I need the SV ones as I have a large ass!

Lots of cheaper kits around based on the caterham style.
Just been down to see Dave (Outlaw flat four) he may be bringing his drag car to Dunsfold and Santa Pod are a definite to bring their 300mph drag car. So if you guys can bring some of your cars too then we could have a great drag car display at Dad's day Out :thumb:

That is one thought, but I think I might get myself a bullet camera and recorder set up, found one that can be powered from the cigarette lighter, so I could film all day then and not have to worry about batteries, I also found a mount that can be attached to seat head rests :thumb: This would work well for trackdays in the car as I can stow the recorder in the map pocket on the back of the seat :D:)
Also a bullet cam set up would allow me more options of fitting it to a bike, will let youknow what I get when the new set up is purchased.
I had a look at the pd170 as you suggested, they are some what more than I was thinking of spending on a video camera so more research needed there me thinks. Going to the camera shop later to price up the filter system and filters I'm after so may ask when I'm there.
This is the camera and recorder I was thinking about http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/minidvr-h720-bullet-camera-system.html
Along with a headrest mount and the bullet cam clamp. Will also see about the filter kit they sell (see if there is one for this camera), then it will just be a case of getting some editing software and getting filming.
Some goodies for the dslr were purchased today:) More may be purchased before the tour, may just get the bullet cam not sure yet..

He's bringing a a Celica GT. Might not sound great but it's bright yellow with the full GT body kit and actually looks really good. One of the kids down my road asked him if it was a Lambo!! :)

Struggling to raise a smile at the moment................ car is broken :(
If the people whose help i need to fix it can deliver on their promises i may still make it with just a day or two to spare............. but previous experience has taught me that anything expected to take two weeks quite often takes six

What's wrong with her?
Gearbox is broken :( Not really angry about that as i was testing a prototype of a new design gearkit and a failure was always a possibility, that's the price of research and development.......... atleast it's all covered under warranty :)
But it's the timing that's bloody awful :banghead: Got straight onto my transmission man yesterday and he said although he goes on holiday next Friday he would rush build me up one of his older design boxes to get me out of trouble................... but he rang back today to say he was short of a few bits needed to do it :(
The bits he needs could be taken from my current broken box but he would need them soon and my mechanic isn't available to drop the box off the car :o
All things considered............... Wales is looking like a lost cause :(
That sucks, the cossie would be epic in Wales.

Could you not get the car trailered to your Transmission bloke so he can get the bits off himself?

Bugger :(
Could you not get the car trailered to your Transmission bloke so he can get the bits off himself?
Unfortunately he doesn't work out of a garage with ramps etc :( He is a retired Cosworth Rally driver who went into engineering and is now also retired from that............ now works from home in a very large shed full of machining gear at the bottom of the garden where he just messes about with mostly Cosworth drivetrain stuff :)
Had a call from him this afternoon and there is still a glimmer of hope as he has the majority of stuff needed for a new box............ he also has the missing bits but they are part of a broken box he has there but he needs the assistance of a specialist welder to remove them and transfer them over............... if he can get this done on Monday then Game On :thumb:
He could also get these missing bits from my broken box or even repair my breakage if i could get it there for Monday................... i tried to get the box off the car myself today but couldn't get the car high enough to do the job :( Other people have told me they have managed it on axle stands before......... but they must be more confident or superhuman than me ;)

Just a quick question
The satnav files, can someone tell me how to put them on a TomTom One satnav. Its about 2 years old so don't know if its too old.
Thanks
Hi Greg,
you'll need to check if it has itinerary planning
go through the menu on the TOM TOM, if you see it listed then all you need to do is download the .itn to your PC, then connect the TOMTOM to it and open it using my computer.
one of the folders will be named .itn. basically all you have to do is drag and drop our file into that folder.
then when you go to Itinerary planning on the TOM TOM (after disconnecting from the PC) there's a tab that says Load new itinerary, load the wales day 1 and you're all set.
if you dont have the itn planning tab on the device then we may need to look at a software change which i think Pete knows about
let me know how you get on

Good point - what exactly IS Wales's finest?
Sounds like a warning message is required so pint can be procured.

Don't worry, we arrived at the hotel around midnight friday when we went to test/film the route and they still opened the bar for us :D
If there's no one in the bar just ask the bloke on reception, although Pete did warn them so hopefully they'll have an extra person on the late shift. :thumb:

What might explain it is that we were following the LAMBO in the Evo Triangle! He got lost all evening but we had stopped after a few miles and thought this aint right! I don't know, because the supercharger is cooled by water or something.
What age is the car as surely theyhould be Warrenty parts claims those parts are not general wear and tear.
i have looked at the kind of superchager it uses and they could need to replaced within 50 to 60,000 miles and my car is just over 50,000. And because of this the warranty will not cover this - stupid i know.
i have got illegal advice about this and they told me i should go back the garage i bought it from and see what they say, as under the Sales Goods Act they should only sell something if all parts are working and the parts should last at least 6 months. I bought it 4 months ago.
A new supercharger will cost between 1700 and 2500
