The AC Cobra is responsible for the 70mph speedlimit on UK motorways. True or false?

Boris

I HOPE that is true! I remember reading about it in a magazine in an articel written by some AC mad dude! Im going with FACT!

It's partially true...

A prototype AC Cobra Daytona coupé WAS caught doing "in excess of 180mph" on the M1 during a "test run". Some sources say almost 200mph...
There were also a serious of major accidents during 1965 which were attributed to speed and fog.

These are believed to be the two main factors for the introduction of the temporary 70mph speed limit in December 1965.

I thought it was the fear of mass market cars that were actually faster than a morris minor like the jag e-type that did it. I supose the same theme jsut different car.

Another Cobra fact (or is it ?) , Carroll Shelby used to demonsrate the AC Cobra by placing a $100 bill on the dashboard and telling the potential customer if he could catch it when he accelerrated hard they could keep it , of course no-one ever did !

Legend has it that it was a $50 bill and it was taped to the windscreen, but i believe it's true.

As for the Volvo thing, that's definitely true.
I delivered a pizza to Rickard Rydell when he lived in Henley and i was an A-level student (around 93/94) and when i recognised him he was so pleased he signed a Volvo 850 Racing poster. I still have that poster.

OK maybe it was $50 but what a great sales ploy !

In the sixties NASA spent millions of dollars developing a high tech ball point pen that would write in zero gravity meanwhile the more cost sensitive Russian space programme utilised the humble pencil - fact or fiction ??

I'm certain that this is untrue, they would never take pencils into space. The graphite in the pencil is a good conductor and any loose graphite floating around could get into circuits and short them out.

I thought this was made up as a simple to understand example of inginuity over brawn and it just stuck because it sounds so much like it was true.

Fact or fiction?

The SR-71 (Blackbird) takes off with a minimal fuel load and then has an in-flight refuel almost immediately, before rising to 100,000 feet (or more!) at Mach 3+.

This is true.
I asked about this once and the purser showed me a gap at the back of one seat vs the bulkhead of the plane he could put his hand into and then told me to try again as I was getting off. There was no space at all.

Fact?

Yep, because on the ground it leaks like a sieve.

The panel gaps close up when it's flying high and fast (due to heating of the panels as a result of air friction).

They take off with a minimal fuel load, do a "sprint" to heat up the airframe, and then refuel at about 500mph (a KC-135Q is only capable of 580mph)
Once fully fuelled they fly at between 80,000 and 120,000 feet and cruise at over Mach 3...

Fact or fiction

When braking hard at above approximate 150 mph if you dont have grooves or holes in your brake discs to vent the plasma gas build up your brake pad would spontaniously ignite and explode.

22-01-10, 00:17 AM
Gotta be fiction, since i've braked hard from over 150mph without grooved and/or drilled discs and my pads were intact afterwards.
Besides, why would speed matter? Surely it's temperature rather than speed?

Has this happened to you Chris?

I'm guessing if the traffic warden sees the ticket for a different council and is too stupid to notice there is also a London one on there that this could happen. However, you ought to be able to get it overturned by providing evidence of your London ticket.

This is one of those is it or isn't it ?? I was first told this by a quite experienced old motorcycle enthusiast and then I heard it again relating it to a dealer down in Dorset that I pass quite regularly , I guess I'm going to have to ask one day aren't I ?
