Sporting Bears, Bentley and charity children pop to Parliament

Back in July, we took part in a fantastic event. Thanks to the Sporting Bears Northwest and in particular the hard working inspirational Max Walker, 10 amazing children (from 5 different children’s hospitals around the UK) and their families were driven in style through London in a fleet of Bentley cars.

The Sporting Bears had arranged for these children and their parents to travel to London on Monday 1st July and stay as guests in the Hilton London Metropole Hotel, partner of the event. The ten families stayed in stylish and spacious rooms, with skyline views across London the night before the event.

The following day, the children were driven in a fleet of Bentley cars to meet their MPs in Parliament. The cars were provided by Bentley Motors UK, event partner and Lisa Cooper. The ten Bentleys were escorted by the Metropolitan Police outriders, through Central London, before finally crossing Westminster Bridge into Parliament.

Thanks to the Police escort team, the route was cleared from the Hilton London Metropole to the Parliament. Driving around London without having to stop whilst in the capable hands of a highly skilled police escort team is an amazing experience in itself but imagine how those children and their families must feel when they’re inside a brand new Bentley with a chauffeur and is all done as a reward for their bravery.

The cars and their passengers travelled from the Hotel, passing Buckingham Palace, down Whitehall, past the Cenotaph and Downing Street to finally cross Westminster Bridge over the River Thames and enter the New Palace Yard secure area, under Big Ben.

But this was just the start of their day. Around 10:30am, the children met their MPs. Then they visited and toured Parliament, broke for lunch around the old County Hall and were then driven to Jubilee Gardens, where the London Duck Tours have donated one of their amphibious Ducks just for the children and parents. They enjoyed an exclusive tour on the roads of London and then into the River Thames to complete their day.

Most children have serious or terminal conditions, so this experience was important to share with their parents starting with their stay, ready for the following day’s excitement, with thanks to Hilton London Metropole.

Incredible kids, my passenger in particular has a wickedly sharp sense of humour and no self pity for what he has gone through, just getting on with things with a sense of purpose we could all learn from. It’s all very humbling and they deserve every chance at a smile we can give them. I feel very lucky to have been a small part of this.

Thank you Max and Baz Firth (congratulations on the MBE), Huw Page, Rachel Walker, Graham Jones, Colin Smart, Ceri Jones, Andy Green, David Shepherd, Andrew Lake, Tony Beverley and Simon Parish.
